My rant of the day: OIL!
Why should we open up ANWR do drilling (at a huge cost) and fight wars around the world in an attempt to "build" nations more to our liking (which will cost us trillions), just to squeeze another 30 years out of the oil-based energy system?

We're going to have to kick the oil habit eventually anyway. So why not get on with it?

We should use the chance to encourage new technologies (like hybrids and flexible fuel cars) and to do a better job conserving fuel. It'd create jobs, make the air cleaner.

Plus, it would help defuse a geopolitical mess because those techniques could be exported, making the development of the Third Word practical without adding an unbearable amount of pollution.

This is not pie-in-the-sky stuff. Much of the technology already exists. So why the delay? Why is the president refusing to lead on this issue?

1. Partly because the demand isn't there yet
Many people don't know much about the looming oil crisis, or don't care. As long as they can keep buying gas, food, and clothes, it won't hit home. Also, many people don't associate rising costs overall with rising oil prices (shipping costs, manufacturing costs, etc.)

Besides, who cares about helping the environment, right? I mean hell, they won't even admit that global warming has anything to do with pollution. :grr:

4. Once prices hit $100/barrel, they'll worry.
Of course, by then it'll be too late - not that it's not not too late now. :-(

The end is near. It's inevitable.

3. Sorry, you need some ranting practice --
You posed some good, intelligent questions. You did not post a rant.

Perhaps you could add a few more expletives, exclamation points and :grr: .

But keep trying.

:toast:
