23. I have hopes it will end as quickly as the speeches he promised to give...
in the run-up to the transfer of power in Iraq. Remember those? He promised a speech a week in the six weeks leading up to the transfer, then cancelled them without comment after the first speech flopped. I don't recall the details of why the speech was so bad (maybe someone else has a link), but I do remember people from all ends of the spectrum thought his comments naive and counterproductive and his handlers quietly pulled him from further involvement.

very odd how they never materialized, and how no one in the media seemed to notice that he backed down from his bold promise.

Kind of like when he very boldly said he wanted European countries to "show their cards" on a second Iraq war vote, and then quietly backed down when he realized he was going to lose.
