New bankruptcy bill won't allow you to stop a sheriff sale at last minute.
You have to see a credit counselor first or within past 5 days before you can file.

2. So why do Republicans hate America?
And why are they so anxious to be superior? Even if they are poor Republicans, why?

22. Did your credit union bring a 727 action against them and obtain
a denial of their discharge on account of these actions. It could under current law. The bankruptcy bill under consideration has nothing to do with abusers and everything to do with sticking it to average middle class debtors who need bk protection and discharge on as a result of divorce, illness, injury, lay off, or entrepreneurial failure.

Educate yourself for Christ's sake. HALF of all bankruptcies stem directly from a medical emergency -- cancer, a car accident caused by an uninsured driver, long-term problems like MS and Alzheimer's. In 75 percent of those cases, the people were middle-class folks who had health insurance at the time of the incident. And most of the other half involve people who lost their jobs, experienced a house fire or some other catastrophe. Very, VERY few bankruptcies are related to people going wild with credit cards for furs and cars.

16. You need to read the bill as to those who want to repay.
There's red tape added to them too.

24. Well my "stupid stuff" was...
Husband getting laid off after almost 20 years (thank you *)
Lost health insurance, dental etc. (prescriptions between us are about 300/month) (again, thanks to the moron)
Got seriously ill in April 2003 (probable MS) and have not worked since November 2003.

Can't even get new brain MRIs bec NO insurance.

Our big luxury was a new comforter set. Woo Hoo!

We had to "live" on CCs.

It took my husband 6 months to get a new job - temp, $9/hr, no insurance, no benefits.

Crucify me.

Aren't we all glad the 8-year nightmare of the Clinton administration is over? Not!

26. $859,000 and counting in medical bills since 2001
I adopted two girls, siblings. One is autistic; the other was diagnosed as early-onset/rapid-cycling bipolar disordered (the dx has been recently amended to include schizo-affective disorder). I got them at 1 and 3 and at the time we did not know that these girls would suffer so. They're 11 and 13 now. It turns out the birth-father's family is rife with these diseases -- we understand it's down to just about every individual, up and down the generations.

Were we supposed to give them back after several years, after symptoms started appearing?

Our bipolar daughter has spent 21 of the last 42 months in locked psychiatric wards. The cost has ranged from between $900 to $1350 per day for the room alone, with daily physician fees around $250 per day, and monthly prescription costs of around $1500. We have the traditional health insurance plan: 90 days psychiatric coverage per year, with a $1 million max, then we're on our own. You do the math!

I suppose those so gung-ho to support the bankruptcy bill would agree with Hitler's regime and gas these "useless eaters", these drags on the Glory of the Fatherland. To those for whom these words ring true I say (and these are words I rarely say): F*CK YOU!

We will be judged by how we treat the least amongst us. Amen!

28. These people who support this despicable legislation and then
claim the moral high ground, need to stop thumping their bibles and start reading them.

Mental health coverage as it exists in this country today is an even sorrier state of affairs than insurance coverage for other medical conditions. No one should be faced with the choice of saving their child's life and losing their home.

Hugs to you and your family, davekriss. I have a daughter with autism, and can only imagine the stress you face.

29. Yes
Those people who are so eager to stop abortion would love to see these girls born--and then abandoned. What would the Republicans say when they hauled their starving bodies to the street? You shouldn't have been with those damned disabilities, damn you!

Human monsters, straight from hell. :eyes:

12. Chickens coming home to roost.....
the price of democracy that we extract from third=world nations for the pleasure of having it our way. Insurance Co's, Credit Card Co's, Health Care Providers...and the ownership society. Does seem like a bunch of loan sharks upping their take. Can you tell I read the book?

Its in the fine print.

The requirement must be met before you file to keep from losing your house.

17. You are presumed to be abusing the system unless you can
prove otherwise.

Goodbye presumption of innocence. The minute you step into bankruptcy court you must prove to their satisfaction you are not scamming them.

You will have had to have talked to a credit counselor by Wednesday, March 2 to be allowed to file to stop the Sheriff's Sale.

20. read this article from the SF Chronicle
Edited on Fri Mar-04-05 02:47 PM by oldtime dfl_er
Here's an excerpt:

"Also rebuffed, 58-39, were two proposals focused on people whose significant medical expenses for illness force them to file for bankruptcy.

The first would have allowed people to keep at least $150,000 of the equity in their primary residence. If, in addition, medical bills exceed 25 percent of the person's income, the second proposal would have exempted them from a new test in the legislation measuring income and assets of bankruptcy applicants to determine if debts can be discharged.

Under unlimited homestead exemptions in a half-dozen states, "fat cats who go into bankruptcy don't lose their mansions," said Kennedy, author of the twin amendments. "Where is fairness in this bill?"
