I have no personal experience, but I noticed that Working Assets has one

10. Amen on Providian
They've intimidated a friend of mine who has their card through them as though they're a front for the Sopranos.

3. Join a credit union and get one from them
My intrest rate is very low and the fees are even lower, plus i like that the money goes to the credit union and not some bush supporting mega bank.

4. none
save your money- dont spend money you dont have
get a debit card if you need something with credit backing (most have MC/Visa). In instances where checks are not accepted a debit card can serve you like a check and them like a credit card. My advice (as having filed Ch7 last year) NEVER get a credit card.

5. GM card for sure !!!!
It is no fee and you get 5% credit towards the purchase of a new vehicle. We have used over $8,500 in the earned in the last 8 years towards new vehicles. Pays for the first year depreciation!

But make sure you pay off the balances each month (of any card you have) or you are shooting yourself in the foot.

21. Unfortunately GM changed their policies
My father in law is a GM retiree, so we get a discount on GM cars. In the past I would get that discouint plus a huge discount from using my GM credit card. (I charge quite a bit every month and pay balance the same month) .

Unfortunately a few years ago they stopped letting people use both the employee/retiree discount and GM card discount, so I no longer use the GM card. The other discount is better.

Currently I go by where I got the best deal on airline tickets and money back. As I didn't spend a huge amount of time researching, I won't guarantee these are the best deals. For whatever it is worh, I use a business card from Capital One and a personal card from MBNA. I have one business supplier alone where I buy spend about $4000 a month. I finally figured out a year or so ago I should be putting that on a credit card where I get something back rather than sending checks as I did in the past.

8. I think some organizations have one
where a certain percent of your yearly spending is donated to the organization. That seems like a good kind of card to have.

20. It depends on where you will qualify..
CUs are organized geographicaly and by employers. There should be one in which only residents of your city or county are eligible. Larger employers and institutions will organize a CU for exclusive use by their employees and families. Larger CUs can usually offer better rates than smaller ones. There are some exceptions.

I'm a member of a small CU organized for a local community college. They have a staff of two. Obscure building. No fancy furniture. No advertising. No hidden fees. None of that. The advantage here is the staff ratio. Since there are so few members, the staff can spend more time looking for better rates for our credit needs. But a larger CU would have more "collective credit" to leverage against a credit product.

Here's the link for NCUA, the agency that regulates CUs.

19. Your credit union
Edited on Fri Mar-04-05 03:13 PM by Coastie for Truth
Not a Bank - but a depositor owned credit union. Open a checking and savings account --- and get a debit/credit card from YOUR credit union.

I moved "everything" to my CU.

Or you might investigate http://www.workingassets.com/ -- they offer a
credit card as well as good long-distance phone service; it *MAY*
have favorable (or at least humane) terms.
