Where Is Our Abbie Hoffman? Where Are Our Anti-War Leaders?
I see a lot of folks who oppose the war but no one personality has risen to the top to take the mantel and ram it down Bush's throats! There are several folks on AAR that may be contenders.

Who am I missing here? Is there ANYONE we can draft out there?

We need leaders! Who can we get? Help me out here!

6. the media ignored the protesters in the 60's and 70's until they couldn't
i.e., the Chicago riots and Kent State to name two incidents. The media is irrelevant for now. We need people to raise hell.

3. they will emerge shortly.
and Pete Seeger is still around.

as for Abbie, I wonder sometimes if, with all his nuttiness, dope-smoking etc., he wasn't more counterproductive than not. He gave the right something to point at and say 'look! it's us or them!"

RIP, though.

11. I agree....Without the draft there will not be much of a movement
But just wait until they tell college kids they'll have to quit school after next semester to go fight for someone else's country.

When properly focused, youthful enthusiasm is boundless.

9. You know what I think?
It's coming. It is all coming. It's just around the corner. I can smell it in the first breezes of spring. It's something I have smelled before.

It's coming. It will be here when the time is exactly right and it isn't far off.

Frankly, it will take Idiot Boy and his Count Svengali to go A Bridge Too Far. And they will. You know they will.

is the person to do the job. I suspect we need an outsider disconnected from the pressures of political life to really hit them as hard as they deserve.

12. Who is "our"? not the Democratic Party, right?
I havent noticed a broad platform of anti-war sentiment in the Democratic Party at the ruling level. But if you mean those street fighters who opposed it in record numbers as the oligarchy ignored the massive demonstrations of peace around the world, then there's plenty of organizers and speakers and performers who are always there when the need arises. Peace and justice dont necessarily cry out for an individual leader, in fact that is a complete contradiction. But the more leaders who bloom on the street in plain sight the closer we get to a just and democratic society, which is all we ask for.

15. Anti-War Movement Still Reeling From 2004 Fiasco
In 2004 the anti-war movement disbanded in order to support a pro-Iraq war candidate for President. It still hasn't recovered.

26. Here we go again...
Edited on Fri Mar-04-05 04:38 PM by DistressedAmerican
In Short:
Kerry voted for the war, never took a forceful stand on ending it. More of the appeaser wing of the party.

Then add in his failure to man the barricades during the Ohio fight...

NOT a strong anti-war leader, not a strong leader at all.

I've said it. It wil be the last I have to report on the issue. Flame away...

I can tell you that is what enraged enough Americans to demand an end to pointless bloodshed.

I am beginning to think they are going to get away with Iraq as long as they don't do the Big call-up.

23. Where are our Beatles?
I've been thinking that fighting these guys in the arena of politics, jingoism and media framing is just not our real strength. In the battle of propaganda, they will likely win, because in that battle lying is an asset and the truth is rarely a catchy slogan.

Right-wing propaganda should fail because it should be one of the least interesting things to look at. Unfortunately, it's the MOST interesting thing to look at these days.

It may seem counter-intuitive, but if we could find a new Rock and Roll, we might be able to strip the Wurlitzer of some power.

30. Music
there are artists out there voicing their opinions and making a difference...take a look at http://www.djpauledge.com/non_violent_resistance.html.

He has also put MLKs Beyond Vietnam Speech to music, which I think is going to be released....

The media ignore this guy because he voices his opinions, unlike most of the coked up djs happy to keep their mouths shut in exchange for playing corporate garbage, but he is developing a huge grass roots anti-war following in the UK and the USA....Finally, he has just agreed to a 3 release series called Unlock The Doors, and starting May 9 America`s biggest ever protest band`s music will hit the dancefloors around the world...

No, I`m not affiliated, I actually discovered this board as a result of a link on his site...So music is helping...

Peace

29. March 19th A Start
March 19th can be the start of rebuilding the anti-war movement that was all but destroyed in 2004.

Will John Kerry, the "anti-war" candidate, be supporting these demonstrations?

Certainly we can count on Howard Dean. Can't we?
