U.S. Fires on Freed Italian Reporter in Iraq

By Daniel Williams and William Branigin
Washington Post Staff Writers
Friday, March 4, 2005; 7:00 PM

Italian officials said three people were injured, including Sgrena. Berlusconi said the two others were Italian intelligence agents, the Associated Press reported.

Sgrena was taken to a U.S. Army surgical hospital in Baghdad and is in "critical but stable condition," the State Department official said.

1. One dead, three others injured
They must have shot up that car like Bonnie and Clyde's. This wasn't just one or two shots.

8. That poor, poor girl in that picture... holding the blood of her parents..
... in her little hands, the anguish in her face, the face of a child...

I will never, ever be able to erase that image from my mind. It makes me ashamed to be human.

2. I am horrified by this incident!
If she is brain-damaged or otherwise permanently-disabled (or if she dies) as a result of this attack, I will be all the more ashamed of our country's actions in Iraq.

3. Weird. On ABC tonight they said she was in
stable condition. And from what Jennings reported, the soldiers were unable to stop them with repeated hand signs, lights, etc., and they wouldn't slow down, so the soldiers shot up the engine block. However, right after I saw this I wondered how much of this whole story we're actually getting or will get? Probably not the whole truth...

9. The "incident" will be made out to be the fault of those

who rescued Sgrena because they were in a civilian vehicle and wearing "local clothing." We shoot "locals" who speed up to checkpoints.

A State Department official said a U.S. hostage coordinator had been working closely with the Italians but that initial reports indicated Sgrena's release was not communicated to either the U.S. Embassy or the military in Baghdad, Washington Post staff writer Glenn Kessler reported.

It was not immediately clear whether Sgrena was rescued or a ransom was paid, the official said.

The Italians were in a civilian vehicle and were wearing "local clothing" when they came under fire at a place called Checkpoint 504 - Camp Victory, the official said. He said they were warned to stop but failed to do so.

Sgrena was taken to a U.S. Army surgical hospital in Baghdad and is in "critical but stable condition," the State Department official said.

18. BBC radio news covered this story tonight:
Host/Interviwer: "Must have been an accident" "Coalition forces"

Guest (Italian journalist?) She is "slightly wounded"

"We hope to speak with her at the (American) hospital soon"
"Italian people are angry"

12. Do you have an alternative site that confirms this info?
I'll take a moment to see if I can find confirmation that this woman wasn't merely "wounded" by shrapnel to her shoulder.

13. I never believed she was merely wounded

I don't believe they ignored warnings.
I DONT BELIEVE ANY OF THE CRIMINAL SPIN THE MSM THROWS AT US.
I'm sure we'll slowly learn more about the story... I wouldn't be surprised if she's already dead.

14. Yes, when the soldiers are shooting at people they think are running
through the checkpoint or whatever, my understanding is that they unload everything into the car to try and stop the car and obliterate all occupants. Didn't seem that likely that she'd be just scraped or something, but you never know, people do get lucky...

One of them died. Maybe they tried to protect her first.

19. That's what the italians said

The secret service guy died trying to protect her. And this guy had a key role in the release of this and other Italian hostages.

However, there are accounts that another secret service man is also seriously injured.

At this point we only know the official spin, and that's already horrendous. Imagine what the real truth may be.

22. I have trouble believing that an Italian reporter and Secret
Service contingent would be so ignorant of American language, signals, etc. that they would attempt to run a road block. It sounds like so much spin to me.

30. just the STANDARD American Military FUBAR press release....
Edited on Fri Mar-04-05 09:50 PM by diamond14

it's ALWAYS the SAME, no matter what happened, no matter where it happened, no matter who was KILLED....

STANDARD American Military FUBAR press release:

.....vehicle was speeding coming up to a checkpoint....vehicle refused to heed flashing lights, hand signals, and firing gunshots into the air....so FINALLY, after trying everything possible, American Soldiers SHOT THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS out of vehicle and everyone in it....

American Military expresses regret...and promises a complete investigation of this 'incident'....

this happens EVERY SINGLE DAY all across Iraq, so the U.S. Military already has the SPIN ready to go....even if it's NOT at a checkpoint...it's still SPUN to be at a checkpoint....sounds better that way.....

23. Remember the 2 Italian women that were released last year?
They were released and made it home safe and sound. The captors negotiated a release with the Italians. I don't know if they dealt with the Italian Government or the Aid Group.

Why did they make it home and the other woman got shot up?

24. CBS: THREE shot by US soldiers...one has SERIOUS lung injury.....

time will tell...we'll know when/if she dies....it all remains to be seen if she will get back to Italy in one piece....

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/02/24/iraq/main541815.shtml

The two other intelligence agents in the car were also wounded, the premier said. The U.S. military, however, said one person was killed and two were wounded, presumably including the journalist. The Apcom news agency said one was in serious condition and is believed to have suffered a lung injury.

26. This incident is an absolute total outrage and FUBAR! I'm not believing
any of it. In any direction right now. Berlusconi may not want her to get home either, we haven't considered that yet, have we?

Look at prior posts about her and what she was reporting on: Fallujah.

I rest my case. Reasonable doubt to be cast in every direction. A conspiracy? Not possible. Repeat after me, not possible.
