Why is "Meet the Press" still called "Meet the Press"?
Press - The people involved in the media, as news reporters, photographers, publishers, and broadcasters.

In the past "Meet the Press" lived up to its title. Newsmakers were questioned by a panel consisting of members of the press.

Now, who do newsmakers meet? Tim Russert.

So why is it "Meet the Press"? Why not "Meet the Russert"?

3. I heard a girdle company is going to buy the show.
It's new name will be "Press the Meat". Actually that was a Red Skelton joke from the 1950's.

18. Not So Much A Fossil As A Student Of Comedy
a a stand up comic myself (strictly an avocation) I took it upon myself to study a lot of the older comics from Milton Berle on forward and when you got talking about Meet The Press I rememebred the old Red Skelton thing about Press The Meat...and so GMTA.

I was actually born in 1971, and am 33 years old right now, so the Red Skelton bit predates me by a couple of decades, actually, but I still remember it, all the same, from my studies in the older comics.

26. The older comics were great.
It isn't just a matter of an old f*rt longing for the "good ole days". The only thing good about those days was that I was young. I like modern times and having a computer in my house.

But comedy has really changed, and for the worse. I rarely watch situation comedies now. It seem that every show has to have the first five minutes of forced double meaning, on meaning regular, one sexual. Red Skelton sometimes did that too, but it always took you by surprise, was somehow natural, and was done quickly and then on to the next gag. Example:

Red has his arms full and needs the keys to open the door. Beautiful starlet has to dig in his pocket for the key.
She: I feel crazy doing this.
Red: Keep going and you will feel nuts.

While both are sexual humor, the first is tedious, while Red's was funny. "Third Rock From the Sun" was horrible. I watched exactly one episode. I am not a prude, and sex can be funny, but there is more to the human condition than sex.

And so many shows now feel like they have to raise my consciousness about some social matter. Some comedy shows seem to have a five minute sermon on some topic at the end of each show. Tired of that, I quit watching sitcoms.

14. Russert has no shame
Russer gets his talking points from the GOP. Look at this recent exchange he had with Chris Matthews:

Matthews: There have been a lot of polls recently showing a very sharp division on Social Security reform: People under 55, a pretty good-sized group, are kind of for reform and people over 55, also a pretty good-sized group, are against it. What are the 55 and older afraid of in reform?

Russert: They are just panicked that this system, the insurance system they paid into all their lives, may, in fact, go away — despite how many times they’re told not to worry about it. They also think the current system is a pretty good idea. They saw their parents and their grandparents taken care of, and think, “Why disrupt a good thing.”

Which poll Matthews? Russert's trying to reassure seniors that bush has a good plan... clearly he has some skin in the game!

27. He Was a Staffer for Mario CUOMO and MOYNIHAN
like Tweety worked under Tip O'NEILL and CARTER. But these incarnations were long ago blotted out by their current satanic selves. G.E.RUSSERT blazed the trail, then mentored Tweety, turning his Lib bleeding heart on wingnuts, reaching out to them, saying that they had been maligned, marginalized, and demonized by MEAN Libs like himself. He was one of the first to reach out to LIMBOsevic about 5 or 7 years after LIMBO's initial success. All this was because G.E.RUSSERT had to "grow beyond" his Lib persona, had to reach outside if his network circus was to stay on the air. LIMBOsevic occasionally refers to GE.E.RUSSERT as "fair," but still labels Tweety as a Lib and hasn't warmed up to Tweety. One time Tweety called-in to the LIMBO circus to "set the record straight" about something or other and ended by BEGGING LIMBO to come on his own circus, saying, "I would LOVE to have you on my show". Fat ass LIMBO said something like, "I bet you would," meaning FAT CHANCE, since LIMBO pulls millions of dittoheads for any appearance.

What is smashing is when G.E.RUSSERT plays clips from the old MTP, where a PANEL of REAL journalists ask HARD questions of BOTH sides of the politics. The contrast with G.E.RUSSERT should be PAINFUL for him to see, if he had any shame. By-the-bye, Tweety just bought a mansion next-door or in the same neighborhood as G.E.RUSSERT.
