Progressive Women vs Conservative Women
Let's see. We've got Helen Thomas, Ann Richards, Molly Ivins, Maureen Dowd....

They've got Ann Coulter and ..... hmmmm

10. Common thread with conservative women
if you read them often...their dislike of women. They're very suspicous of other women. Very critical. Women should be doing a better job raising children, no mention of Dad. Women should be more supportive of men. Women shouldn't expect the same pay as men. Women shouldn't have the same opportunities in business, the military, or government. And when a woman falters, they're quick to jump on her with both ladylike pumps. They live for male approval. I guess they didn't get much attention from Daddy. Whatever. Something happened. Or didn't. And now they spew anti-female venom for their male masters.
The odd thing is, for all their love of motherhood and apple pie, not many match the ideal they extoll. More conservative hypocrisy.
Imagine Charon's column on Hillary if Chelsea had been hit by a car while riding her bike...instead of Charon's son. Charon would have roasted Hillary as unfit. And Coulter? Imagine if Hillary was a 46-yr. old single woman who continually brays abstinence while also bragging of numerous conquests? Gee, Ann, we're confused. How does that abstinence with multiple sex partners work?
Let us know. For the children.

9. Ok...here's my list
We've got wonderful, intelligent women like Elizabeth Edwards, Eleanor Holmes Norton, Maxine Waters, Cynthia McKinney, Tipper Gore, Susan McDougal, Stephanie Tubbs-Jones, etc. I could go on and on.

And they've had people like Barbara Olson (although I will say, God rest her soul), Ann Coulter (what a loony!), Maggie Galligher, Monica Crowley, Laura Ingraham.

I'll take our team over their's, any day of the week!

14. What they've got is a whole cadre of ladies against women
who present themselves as cookie baking June Cleavers who mop the kitchen floor in heels and pearls and churn out perfect children from antiseptic homes and who would never, ever think of working for something as vulgar as money or engaging in anything as degrading as sex without procreation.

Meanwhile, they're the most driven, backstabbing career women out there.

One thing we have to face as Democrats is that these easily identified roles of the 1950s, while an aberration, represent some sort of cultural nirvana for a lot of women who are torn between low paying jobs and the needs of their children.

The way to neutralize their message is to get the economic message out: women were home with their children because WAGES made by their husbands allowed them to afford it.

Push the message that low wages from cheap labor conservatives make for neglected children.

And THAT is how to win against these harpies.

32. The one problem with "Ladies against Women"
There's no such thing as a conservative lady. They're all either bitches or scolds.
Real women--ladies, might you say--are moderate to progressive.

You're damn right about the truth about women being able to stay at home to raise their kids because Dad made enough money to support the entire family on one income. In other words, being a full-time mother in America is a luxury only the affluent and superrich could afford.

15. And don't forget poor old Phyllis Schafley
and her Eagle Forum. She's been battling other women since the '60's. Of course, her own rhetoric has cooked her goose several times. She maintained in the '70's that upstanding women didn't suffer sexual harrassment in the workplace. Then, switched to the side of accusers when Clinton was the target. She maintained homosexuality was not natural but caused by bad mothering....until her son came out. Then it was the fault of our permissive society and the dreaded liberals.
Good old Phyllis. Always good for a laugh.
She was the ultimate career woman, while denigrating career women.
Hey, when your audience is conservative, you don't have to make sense.

Edited on Sat Mar-05-05 12:29 AM by kamqute
I kinda thought she was center-ish; maybe even a non-rabid rightist. She certainly has some great criticisms of Bush though, and she's a great wordsmith :)

While we're in the New York Times, how about Judith Miller for the pro-family, anti-evil enemy?

36. I suspect that she is a libertarian
She did win a silver star in the media's "war on Gore" so she is no leftist. Whenever I read one of her diatribes against the "boy king" I cannot help but think 'so are you sorry that you worked so hard to elect him yet?'

I read a column where she seemed positive about Ayn Rand, and also her email addy is "liberties....". That is why I suspect she is libertarian.
