"Hate speech laws: A new cross for Christians to bear"
Edited on Fri Mar-04-05 11:08 PM by Bluebear
From "The Conservative Voice". Yet another opportunity to whine, having the Presidency, Senate, House and Supreme Court are NOT enough.

Oh, and the page is sponsored by Home Depot.

====

When Pennsylvania was amending its “hate crimes” law, the Ethnic Intimidation and Institutional Vandalism Act, a few years ago, proponents readily dismissed the concerns expressed by Christians about the inclusion of protection for “sexual orientation.” The reason the advocates of traditional values protested was not because they wanted physically to bash homosexuals – believing Christians do not operate that way -- but because they realized that their own First Amendment rights easily could be jeopardized.

Such concerns were dismissed as the figment of overheated imaginations by those legislators and advocacy groups pushing for the hate crimes law. The idea of jailing the purveyors of tasteless jokes was derided; the amendment was about the throwing of sticks and stones, not name-calling. State Rep. Mark Cohen (D–Philadelphia) promised “This bill is not about what ministers or Sunday School teachers say. This bill is about what thugs, hooligans and murderers do.” It was about “blood in the streets” rather than bad jokes.

Then came the homosexual sponsored “Outfest” in Philadelphia last fall.

A small group of Christian activists decided to protest at the event that occurred on October 10, 2004. A self-proclaimed homosexual security group called the Pink Angels decided to prevent the Christians from exercising their constitutional liberties. There was plenty of jostling and heated words but the videotape of the event shows no actual violence occurring. The Pink Angels went free. The Christian protestors were not so lucky.

Fucking assholes. I wish the Christians who refuse to be Christian would call themselves something else. Like "hate-filled whiny Jesus-despising clueless ignorant fucks".

2. I just wrote Home Depot & told them to enjoy their "conservative" base
Corporate political donations aside, when they start sponsorship of pages as extreme as this I am no longer a customer.

10. I heard the "persecution" bit in church all the time (long)
I used to go to a southern baptist church. I just couldn't bring myself to leave for a long time (born and raised in one, you know) - but I finally got tired of putting up with their hate and prejudices; btw, whenever they say "oh, we love the sinner, but hate the sin", thats bullcrap. You should listen to them in the men's get-togethers; I know, I have for years. They talk about minorities, homosexuals, "libruls",and any woman with any bone of feminism in totally derogatory terms, and act like these groups are second-class citizens, etc. To his credit, the pastor of the church for the last seven years never talked in this tone, and he's a wonderful man. Unfortunately, when talk turned to these topics, he tended to just try to ignore the more inflammatory talk or change subjects.
Anyway, I digress. Another thing they would talk about constantly is how "persecuted" conservative christians were in America. GIVE ME A FRIGGIN' BREAK!! I used to tell them they have NO IDEA what persecution is, and that maybe before crying themselves a river, they could ask some people in Africa, China, etc., what REAL persecution is before they decide to keep playing that pathetic card.
I now go to a United Methodist church and guess what; they teach what Christ taught in the Gospels!!! What a surprise!! The gospels were just WAY too librul for The southern baptist church just to talk about, so they just stuck to attacking homosexuality and public schools.

12. CAG first of all welcome to DU
Second, congratulations on finding a happier environment to worship.

>Unfortunately, when talk turned to these topics, he tended to just try to ignore the more inflammatory talk or change subjects.<

How many spiritual leaders are engaging in what he is....yes, they don't participate in the hate speech but they also are not speaking out against it.

Don't be a stranger here, ya hear?

14. Hate speech
Hate speech is not "OK" directed at any group. But, when one group spreads hate, while hiding behind "free speech" well, then THAT is a problem.

16. Yes I can help
The page's advertisers are the "Christian Singles Network", "Home Depot" and "1800Contacts". Every time you click refresh you will scroll through their ads.

Can you elaborate on "hate 'speach' towards christians" and why you think that is "ok"?

And if you don't vote it's curious that you spend time on political forums! Just sayin'.

15. I'm Not Convinced That Home Depot Sponsors That Site Or The Content...
Edited on Sat Mar-05-05 11:36 AM by arwalden
it looks more like the site's owners have some sort of "affiliate" arrangement with Home Depot (whereby the site owners get a pittance for any click-throughs that result in a sale at the Home Depot site). -- Or... the site's owners have an arrangement with some other banner-ad clearing-house folks who pay the owners a small fee so that they (the ad agency) can display the ads they they want to. In this case, Home Depot's agreement wouls be with the ad-agency/ad-service and not necessarily an endorsement of the conservative site itself.

It is annoying... I'd need more convincing information than just a rotating click-through banner ad that appears on the page.

17. Hi ar
Well, I think the whining article is the more important topic. But I did email home depot to let them know my displeasure of them being associated with the site. At the least they should know about it :)

18. I know...
Someone at HD might trace it back and pull their ads from that agency... or the agency might do a better job of screening the sites they put their bulk ads on. It couldn't hurt to try.
