I know that they all had national and international repercussions but, which one was the most significant "news" story? Which one impacted our lives, economically or otherwise? How many hours did you watch each of them? Or do you think Michael Jackson story is more important than all the above?

1. None of the above, though OJ was a
novelty at the time (famous guy kills, runs, gets off) and the crime was so horrific.

2. Stewart was a political hit, payback for Dem support.
That's what differentiates the stories. Too bad COM/MSM missed that angle.

3. mike is the most important news story of this century
wars, murders, social and political unrest, and even the south east asian death toll do not compare to "mike drama" unfolding in california. the story of a 40 something circus side show freak that had sexual relations with little boys is the most important story of this century.

5. You Forgot Gary Condit
Remember how they destroyed this guy night after night? Of course since this was about sex and not launching wars or fleecing the economy or manipulating the news.

Condit showed Democrats had no spine and the right-wing agenda sold very well on cable TV (this is when Faux overtook CNNServative in the ratings) and many will suggest this gave this regime the cover to destroy the economy and fall asleep (purposely or not) on national security.

Nothing makes me hit the remote faster than seeing Nancy Grace, Dan Abrams or another of these celebrity head-hunters. These aren't trial, they're TV shows staged in court-rooms with everyone...judge, jury, defense & prosecution, playing up to the cameras and if they happen to come close to justice, that'll work for now.

6. Condit was merely filler during the "Year of the Shark Attacks"
September 11 changed all that.

8. Filler???
I remember sitting in Boston 2 weeks before 9/11 and all the TV showed was non-stop Condit. He was OJ & Monicagate (the two biggies to that point) all in one.

Now pardon me for just falling off the turnip truck and not being "cool for the room" here, but what is the "Year of Shark Attacks"? Other than a bad sequel to Jaws.

9. Summer of '01 was all sharks and Condit
If it wasn't one, it was the other.

7. They are all "Red Herring!"
All of them were for entertainment of the masses, while the Neocons gained power. In fact, maybe O.J. didn't do it!

12. Only the Peterson case dealt with a major 'social issue' Rethugs push

every election--the politics of abortion.

"pro-lifers" thought: if Scott Peterson could be convicted of murder for killing an unborn fetus, than the day of similar reckoning for any MD who performs an abortion anytime during a woman's pregnancy, or who presecribes RU486 for her, would be drawn a little bit nearer. That's the kind of subtle 'incrementalism' Rethuglicans LOVE.

Most people were so focused on Amber Frey or on Peterson's claim to have gone fishing on Xmas they didn't even notice the far right reframing of abortion politics they were being spoonfed with every day's "news", month after month.
