Would you know the "devil" if he was sitting across the table form you?
Sadly, according to a friend of mine, that is one of my weaknesses.

She is the mom of one of my daughters friends - and a family that we spend time with. They are born-again, hard core christians, so that subject is typically never talked about. We don't talk about politics either.

We are on the board together of a student scholarship foundation and were evaluating an application after meeting with the student and his parents. The scholarship was for a summer guitar camp in Seattle. The young boy and his dad were psyched about the opportunity. The dad seemed like an old rocker dude. He worked the night shift at a local factory. He had long hair and an earring. I liked him and they seemed like the perfect family for the scholarship. My friend abstained from the final vote and before leaving the meeting told me that my downfall would be the inability to see the devil, even if he was "sitting right across the table from me".

Wow . . . I better not show her any of my high school "rock and roll days" pictures.

2. Just speaking strictly for me...
I would have looked her straight in the eyes and said, "Nonsense. You sit right across the table from me and I see you clearly for what you are"

5. I probably would have responded that he would reject "Jesus",...
,...long before you failed to identify "the devil".

8. "I'm looking at the devil right now"
would have been my comeback. Seriously.

Calling these thugs and bullies on their unchristian behavior is a great tactic.

9. How unfortunate she missed the chance to show Christ's love.
But sadly, that doesn't seem to occur to the born-again hard core fundies these days. Never send to ask what Jesus would do--it might cause them to change their actions. Sigh....!

10. How well does she know her Bible?
"For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is not strange if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness." (2 Corinthians 11:13-15 RSV)

11. Your friend's accusation that you are unable to see --
-- the devil, even if he was sitting right across from you reflects a really snotty attitude. I would urge you to find real friends and dump this one on religious grounds. Sometimes you have to run a powerful blast of DRANO through the pipes.

Your friend owes you an apology. She also owes an apology to the father and his son who showed up that day in good faith for the chance at a scholarship.
