What do you think of us who post primarily in the Lounge?

Are you intimidated by us?

Do you look down on us?

lately there have been a lot of Lounge posters who've posted stuff like "Wow GD sure is scary" or "I'm not posting in GD, no way"

I just wanted to know what you guys thought...

had to giggle to myself. i dont see it scary nor anything else. i didnt get it myself. but then, if a person feels that way, certainly not gonna tell them they are wrong. they get to feel whatever they chose.

I post in both places about equally. It kinda depends on my mood.

If I want to argue with DLCers, I'll go to GD. If I want something else, I'll go to the Lounge. If I want to see what's up locally, I'll go to my state forum.

I don't make a distinction between the two zones for posting. I post here and there and over there next to the butter churn and up top the ice box and two doors down from the Turkish steam bath.

I have a sense of some individual people in those places and it's been mostly positive for me.

When I first came here in 2001, I was very active in GD. After awhile, all the arguments started looking the same. I still read here everyday, but a lot of times, I feel as though I've seen it all before. When somebody says something real thought provoking or new, I will post... otherwise I tend to just read in here.

It seems like you guys just BS a lot, and aren't really that into politics. It seems like the general consensus over there is that the folks in GD are wasting their time and blowing hot air. As for your question as to whether the GD folks are intimidated, I think that that reinforces my point: that you guys think you are above the fray.
Clearly I'm new here, but I've lurked for a bit.

if we werent into politics, we wouldnt be here. I read CONSTANTLY, in LBN and GD. But I really only post in the Lounge, because I am less likely to be jumped on for a joke, and am more likely to create original postings. In here, I find myself posting "yeah" or "boy bush sucks." It just doesn't seem like it's contributing for me to post here. I don't have epihanies, and share most of the same views as everyone else.

And I, for one, don't think you're wasting your time, or blowing hot air. It's just that sometimes it seems to us that some people refuse to allow any lightheartedness into political discussion. Emphasis on some, I know most GD posters are great, easygoing people :hi:

So many of the posters are very witty and make really funny remarks, which seems to lighten things up a bit. But I also like the intensity of discussion.

Longgrain doesn't speak for the entire lounge.

I for one am very interested in politics. What I'm not interested in is the unnecessary bickering that goes on here. If there is an intelligent discussion going on in here, I choose to follow it. I will chip in if it is worth the time. I've been here... awhile. I'm not going to waste my time with stuff I've already heard countless times. Which a lot of posts in GD lately seem to be.

think less, no. i think you guys are having fun, have an interesting group of fun going on, supporting each other. i like the lounge. i so enjoy the humor. a lot of really smart people with really smart humor. that is always a hoot for me

I think that you guys in the Lounge have a heck of a lot of fun. I always enjoy myself when I go there, but is not the main reason I come to DU. I come here to learn things and, since I live in ruby red Texas, to have political discussions with people who feel much the same way I do about *.

I've seen the comments about it getting rough in GD and GDP, but I've never had any problems. Then again, when I open a thread and I see that it's getting a little ugly, I just back right out again and don't get involved. There's lots of other threads in the sea.

I never understand that. If people don't like GD, fine. But to go around announcing it is unnecessary. I honestly don't think I have ever seen anyone do the same thing with the lounge.

than in any of the other forums. If you aren't a regular in the Lounge you are lucky to get your posts responded to, let alone a thread kept alive.

GD has been crazy at times, a lot of heated debates and passionate debates. Also for awhile there we were battling the evil forces from forums far far removed from us and that had folks "up in arms" and on their defenses.

In the Lounge you guys don't have to post <<sarcasm>> after a smart assed post. In GD and most of the other forums, if you don't others may take offense and be insulted by it.

I actually had a good time but I could tell it was clickish.

bettyellen was tending bar some time ago, but normally I don't have much luck getting responses to my posts or threads. Heck, on Mardi Gras I started a Happy Mardi Gras thread and even gave out beads, but it didn't last long at all. :shrug:

You guys have a lot of fun, are close and very supportive of each other. Some of your posts are VERY funny!

As for being intimidated... guess I think I'm a older than you and find it hard to fit in. Plus being a serious person by nature who has basically lost her sense of humor in recent times... makes me more comfortable in GD. I respond to a lot of your polls and such, and occasionally leave a comment but not often.

But I love coming over to the lounge and playing voyeur... I admire the sense of humor, sharpness and creativity many of you Loungers have.

But really, I don't care where people post.

Let me go and ask a few of my Lounge Peeps how they feel...

Everyone wants to sleep, eat, and drink with each other and exclude everyone else. I rarely visit.

I think of you as one of us--maybe just a little less serious than those of us lurking in GD, LBN and Editorials.

I visit the lounge a couple of times a week to see what is going on there.

There are a few who equate having fun with not being serious about politics. I would personally like to leave a flaming shit sack on each of their doorsteps, and watch them stomp on it and scream "Damn kids!"

To be honest, I spend more time lurking in GD than I spend posting in the Lounge. I usually find that GD threads contain many opinions that agree with mine, so I don't feel the urge to post vacuous replies that consist of "I agree!" or some other crap like that. I also tend to ignore the useless flamefests.

It has been many months since I've bothered to click on abortion, religious, white guys suck, LIHOP/MIHOP, or chemtrail threads. If I know that I'm going to be unable to change someone's mind, I'd rather post my feelings on little-known Kiwi bands.

OK now I am embarrassed, I don't think I know of ANY bands from New Zealand!

No, I don't look down on you. I couldn't tell you what the general consensus around here is. I don't post in the lounge much because I haven't found too much I can relate to there. Maybe it's an age thing.....I don't know. Does that answer your questions? :)

I love the Lounge and I enjoy other parts of DU, too. I bounce according to my mood and the topic I'm interested in at the time.

I follow the issues that interest me into whatever forum they are being discussed. DU is a very diverse group of people covering a broad range of topics on any given day.

And haven't started a thread there since the same day...

I just needed to step out of the Lounge for a bit...things have been getting a bit crazy there lately...:hi:

I think it is fascinating that such a divide would exist
on this board. Hmmm.. makes me want to go check out the lounge.

Only on the particularly trivial and/ or narcissistic threads. I spend most of my time in LBN, but visit the other main forums, plus three or four DU groups, on a semi-regular basis. I came to DU three years ago as a democratic activist who wanted to learn more about the issues, and who hoped to meet others who also wanted to change the direction of the country. I've made a few good friends here (a couple that I've spent time with in person), but socializing primarily on a discussion board seems somewhat unfulfilling. I prefer to invest my social time in real activities with flesh and blood friends, and my online time in information gathering or political discussion; after all, this is a political discussion board, not a dating or mental health service. I've met some wonderful people on DU, but the best discussions I've had with most of them have been through private messages. The Lounge is fine for killing some time in a sometimes amusing fashion (and I don't think of it as "us" and "them"-DU is one site as far as I'm concerned) but the "Democratic" part of DU is what most of us are here for, and politics is simply not the main focus of the lounge.

But I like to think of the Lounge as a wading pool. Hopefully someone besides my own mom gets that. Just saying....

And by the way, everyone was new to the lounge at some point. I think it's fair to say that there are times when we'd love some "new blood" over there and I'm sure people who mostly frequent GD can say the same thing.

but i've always been a loner of sorts and not prone to "clique" mindsets that can sometimes evolve into us and them perspectives.

the seriousness of the condition the Nation is in. There are alot of hilarious people in the Lounge, and I really enjoy that. I laugh out loud alot.

Unfortunately however, I think I've turned some lounge-ifiers off--I've seen sexism/looksism/pro-natalism in the lounge and I've gone off about it (and will continue to do so. ;) ). So it seems as if there are some folks who prefer to not come near me with a ten foot pole. Oh well, dat's life.

When I'm posting goofy stuff in the lounge it seems like I get more replies from newer DUers, or other outspoken feminists, while other people there ignore me, even when I'm just participating in the humor and addressing myself directly to them.

I dunno, it's just a feeling I get over there. And not all the time. Who knows, maybe I come off sounding weird? It's hard to see how others perceive us, especially online.

When I get ignored in GD, it feels more like it's just a matter of an opinion that didn't find a kindred spirit at the moment.

I arrived at the site from the 2004 election cheating, that was my one and only forum. "Discovered" GD only after it died out, though there are a few faithful still holding it down - it was the place to be for post-election stress. I was so pissed 'back then'! Maybe it's time to cruise over to lounge.

I think of the lounge as kind of a "fun & games" place. I'm just more interested in politics and current events.

Also, I'm a middle-aged individual and I always thought of the lounge as more for the younger crowd. Maybe that's not the case.

have an ironic, sometimes detached view of reality. That is a good thing. GD DUers are more likely to link to polls in distant internets, to sway the outcome of a Rep. Hinchey (D-NY) versus Karl Rove contest. That is also a good thing.

It's kind of like food choices--you need variety to be healthy.

Seems to me that a lot of the lounge lizards (when I call them the Lounge Lizards it really IS with a strong affection!) don't come to GD because it can get "direct" in here sometimes. I think some folks just don't feel comfortable in a message board that gets intense sometimes.

Similarly, i think there are people here in the GD forum who really look to this board for education, information and debate. This is one place they go to to hone skills or sharpen their chops for RL debates. Sometimes they are not up for the silliness that the Lounge brings to bear.

I have no real fear of GD--I figure my first message board experience was the ABC news boards, and I got called a commie a few times a day over there. From there, I went to Salon, and that was some intense posting with some mighty fine writers with high standards and little tolerance for lack of thought.

Having survived both those environs early on, I figure our GD is a cake walk. I do want to say "Lighten UP!" sometimes--but it is difficult NOT to get involved with all the BS coming down these days. On the days it gets to be too much I just walk away.

I think the Lounge lets me blow off steam and have a good laugh when I need one and THAT is valuable to me. That thread of movie titles with "In My Pants" added to the title just about killed me because I was laughing so hard. (Lemony Snickets: A series of unfortunate events in my pants... has become a classic in my household because of THAT thread.) I dearly needed a laugh the day that thread hit, and I bless DU for it.

I do wish the Lounge was less cliquish, however. I have to shrug mentally, and walk away from THAT sometimes too.

I have some to care a great deal for many of the people here--folks who may hang in one place or another--I get different things from different forums, and that is part of the reason I come to DU!

Just kidding. I post in the Lounge occasionally. I've been guilty of a few copycat threads. I think it's good to be diverse, but some of the stuff in the Lounge is a little silly. I think you guys like it that way, though.

I personally have to budget my time, so GD and LBN give me the biggest bang for my time spent.

Started off in GD/P and actually, until today really hadn't done much but light browsing in the other forums. The lounge seemed to fit what i'd have expected. A buncha Dem's hangin out just talking about... well... just about anything. well.. anything but politics. lol The reception has been mostly friendly. Though I do sense an air of "know what your talking about or don't post." not much in the way of political chit-chat going on in the GD/P forum. I love political debate, and consider myself fairly enlightened. But I don't have the time to research for links to add to posts to back up my feelings or opinions. So, maybe that forum isn't the right fit for me to chat in, but a great spot to go to see what the hot topics going on are.

I think it's the wrong way to go about creating humor in here. We don't need a rift between Lounge and GD. And there were a few not so nice comments about each made on here.

and is it so far off the truth. you all do a lot of joking over there. and when i want general chat, not talk politics i go over there. i have heard comments like this poster has spoken of. it is in there. so. you guys arent hiding it, they are posts for all to see. i dont see any reason to necessarily feel bad about it. people dont feel bad when they post it in that room. and if you dont post those comments, then you shouldnt feel bad either, you dont have to own others behavior.

That's my opinion and I'm fine with other people enjoying this thread. I joke ALL THE TIME in the Lounge, but this thread just seems rather immature. Why would somebody ask if people in GD feel inferior or superior to those in the Lounge? We're all on the same level.

I just found your post totally unnecessary. There's no reason why people stop posting in GD, I just think people easily tire of it. It's nothing that GDers do to drive these people out, so I think it was pretty pointless to ask them if they feel "superior" or "intimidated" by the people in the lounge.

I received a pm earlier this evening from a frequent Lounge poster basically telling me "I'm not posting there any more" I called him a whimp...

I am one of those people. I don't think there's really an "excuse" for stopping the GD posts. There may be a few that are "whimps".. but most people just get tired of the bickering and bullshit, some have really seen it all before. My reasons are a combination of both. I have been here a long time, and I've seen the transformation from GD poster to Lounge poster in many of my friends here. I don't think you have any more authority on the subject than I do. Each of us had an individual reason for not posting here anymore.

Again, I called your post dumb because I don't think that it's at all fair to ask these people in GD if they're feeling inferior or superior to those in the Lounge. That's a loaded question that really doesn't have an answer.

You have to admit, it's a nice breather from being so serious. I have been having fun mocking the whole "label" thing. I post all over DU and never even knew their were clicks. Your post is extremely funny though.

Yeah, until now I didn't know that being invited into the Lounge or GD "cliques" was required before I could post there-and I've been here for more than three years! Geez, guess I need to pay closer attention to the protocols. ;-)
