AAR in Los Angeles- anyone else noticed this?
Edited on Sat Mar-05-05 05:50 PM by Stirk
Their news service is decidedly right-wing. When they go to a break and the news segment is played, you'd think you were listening to Fox News. Just in the past day I've heard the following:

- On the ubject of US deaths in Iraq: the latest count is offered (1500), followed by a soundbite from Oliver North praising the occupation. The reporter then repeated North's assertion that the soldiers gave their lives for a noble cause.

- Report on a suicide bombing in Iraq, using the meaningless right-wing "homicide bomber" phrase rather than "suicide bomber".

- Bush's Social Security scam gets glowing coverage. Message: "everyone agrees that Social Security must be fixed soon". The one voice of opposition was only quoted by the reporter (a congresswoman- don't remember who it was), and the reporter summarized her comments with, "but she agrees that Social Security's problems must be fixed soon".

There are plenty of other examples of this right-wing bias- it's really too obvious to miss it. It's literally like Fox News.

Why would Air America Radio be using a right-wing news source in their breaks?

1. In Denver AAR is aired by Clear Channel.
Check out the LA website link for your radio station and you might find the same thing.

I have to say, though, our news breaks don't have a RW slant. Still...

2. Some times stations purchase AAR programing they don't have to
purchase the news. YOu'll notice that especially on clear channel stations.

So, they don't have control over the news service.

7. Well that's interesting.

Thanks for the info. It's very odd to listen to a radio host talking about a news item, and then hear the whitewash version of the same news item just minutes later.

*EDIT*- just checked. Yep- it's Clear Channel.

3. I've not noticed that.
But I listen on internet at work. Mostly on the drive home and to work it's local news and traffic reports.

4. I listen to KTLK in Los Angeles all the time now (where AAR is on)
and I've never noticed this, and I'm pretty in tune to things like this.

I'll have to listen more carefully to see if I agree, but are you sure you aren't being overly sensitive?

8. No, I don't think so.
Do you think the descriptions I offered are overly sensitive?

11. No, but you are paraphrasing what you heard...
...and not necessarily quoting exactly what was said.

Not to dismiss you, but it's all about context. For example, conceding that there is a long-term problem with Social Security that needs to be addressed is not necessarily indicative of a right-wing bias, it's just being honest. Saying that Social Security is in danger of going bankrupt and that there is an impending crisis that needs to be dealt with immediately is a different story. Which did you hear? Is it the fact that the report indicates there's a problem without the caveat that the Bush Administration is exaggerating and proposing policies that don't solve it? Did the report actually include the same hyperbole that Bush uses, or did you just interpret it that way because it failed to report it from the point of view that you'd prefer.

I guess what I'm saying is that the absence of a left-wing bias is not necessarily indicative of a right-wing bias.

I'll listen more carefully, but I haven't heard any examples like the ones you've cited, and I'm pretty sensitive to that stuff. In truth, I don't want left-wing bias in the news any more than I want right wing bias. I can make up my own mind about how to interpret the facts.

18. I understand what you're saying- but that really isn't the case.
At the suggestion of another poster, I looked up the carrier, and it's Clear Channel. Apparently the news service is one that Clear Channel uses, so there you go.

Anyway- I generally hear AAR on KTLK between 8AM and 10AM, so if you have it on then, listen to the news reports. Not the ones embedded into the shows themselves, but the news segments that run with the commercial breaks. They're very overt- it'd be hard to miss the bias.

21. Good, thanks for giving me the time you listen.
Both I and my wife are gonna monitor it and see if we've just been letting it slip by us.

I listen to AAR for the talk, not the news, so it's definitely possible that I've just been ignoring it the same way I'd ignore commercials.

6. In Miami we get CNN's newsbreak
It is rather hilarious considering that Al Franken or Randi might have just totally debunked the report that CNN is spewing.

Edited on Sat Mar-05-05 06:00 PM by tx_dem41
frankly decidedly "left-wing". It's almost a parody of Faux.

12. Yes, it bothers me too
But I decided to just bite the bullet and deal with it because at least I have AAR.

Now I just wish I didn't have to contend with the god damned Clippers games taking up time on the station. They interrupt Randi or Majority Report several times a week! It makes me nuts.

Clear Channel - where owning every media outlet means never having to say your sorry.

15. Boston still gets AAR news, thankfully.
Thankfully the Clear Channel station here in Boston still airs AAR News - I love it because it's still the news, but they still have that AAR feel to it too.

I'm hoping they won't switch to CNN or something soon (not that it matters since I mostly listen to AAR on the web, but it's nice when I'm in the car).

17. I'm afraid I rarely listen to Pacifica (KPFK, FM 90.7) anymore...
since Air America (AM 1150) is back. But I would like to recommend that DUers never, ever miss Ian Masters show on KPFK Sunday mornings at 11:00. He is the best thing on radio, and his show is struggling. This is real substantive talk radio here folks.

19. the national AAR (internet) is running ads for
Repub politican in NJ. I was afraid this would happen. They have to pay the bills, so I guess they have to take the ad money from whoever ponies up. Soon those advertizers will start censoring the product...

AAR news seems to go with the show but USA News seems RW to me.

26. KTLK Los Angeles and KLSD San Diego are both
Clear Channel Stations. Yes, the news is at best wimpy and a joke. I do miss Air America news, also I listen to KPFK because it does not have any commercials!
