I have a Republican friend who I think only pretends to hate Bush when
Edited on Sat Mar-05-05 07:45 PM by NNguyenMD
we talk about politics. This guy is a pretty consevative guy, though I'm not really sure if I believe him when he says he doesn't like Bush one bit. However given his views you wouldn't be so sure. Here are just a couple he enjoys espousing around me.

1) Think government spending on Social Services is welfare for immigrants and lazy minorities.

2) The UN should get out, or realize that they are nothing without the US

3) Immigration into the United States should be reduced to near nothig, the border should be near shut-down.

4) A federal sales tax over an income tax is the way to go.

5) Loves Ross Perot

6) Refers to San Diego as "little mexico"

7) Affirmative action is a big sham in his view

You get the idea, the only serious anti-Bush comments I've heard from him was that he thought Bush was mentally retarded, and that he thinks Bush has screwed Veterans coming back from the war.

Anyways, he's obviously a very conservative Republican guy with enough principle to dislike Bush on those ground I suppose, but I don't know. Why do I have a friend like this? Because in the end he's still a good friend who's been there for me, and we've been able to count on each other through some pretty tough times.

But yeah, anyone here in a similar situation?

PS: I think he's more Libertarian than anything else, he didn't like Bush II, Bush I, Dole or Reagan.

1. The anti-immigration policies of your friend
are not in lockstep with b*sh either. b*sh wants to open up the borders big time, but I think he wants this because it will cause the price of labor in the US to drop.

2. An Old Navy Buddy of Mine
is an extremely religious, extremely conservative member of the community and he totally detests bush. He thinks he is not conservative and not religious and he held his nose and voted for Kerry. At least, thats what he told me and I believe him. He is a rather learned man in his mid 30's who has figured out that bush and his talk just don't represent his truly conservative christian views. Lets hope the virus spreads.

10. I hope so too
Too bad he couldn't go out and talk to some people in his town. Maybe a lot of people will wise up with Bush's plans and budget cuts.

3. Dated a guy who is a very hard core republican...
His bottom line was conserving his wealth--- He has absolutely no interest in the "right-wing" social agenda. Bush enraged him with "reckless" spending leading to the giant deficits.

Quit dating him, but it was unrelated to his political affiliation.

17. I know many people like this. The miracle of the Repubs is marrying up
greedy rich voters who want to smoke pot and get laid with the thumpers and holding that coalition together.

5. Who the hell does he expect
to pick all the grapes and lettuce for him, and do all the other menial, low paying jobs that U.S. citizens refuse to take? Or does he want the price of all those things to go up dramatically so that U.S. citizens will take those jobs?

And on the other end of the spectrum, who does he expect to do all the scientific, engineering and other specialized technical work that Americans are becoming too poorly educated to handle?

I'm glad that you're still able to maintain a friendship with him despite such divergent views, and at least he didn't vote for Bush, which is worth something.

6. Repubs commonly memorize talking points...
for the sole purpose of disguising their hate.

When you peel back the talking points, it always comes down to hating Blacks or Mexicans or Murphy Brown or happy people.

These days, outside of hate, there is really no reason to be a Republican.

8. I deal with several people with right views.
I live in San Francisco, and it's not easy finding a right winger here. But, my work brings me in contact with several right leaning white collar professional types.

Since they are my customers, I figure I am at a disadvantage. I could win a debate, and lost a customer. So, I protect my self interest by not saying what I REALLY think about the republicans. If provoked, I might say something like, "Well, conservatives used to stand for fiscal restraint. Somebody's gonna to end up paying...one way or the other...for all this deficit spending."

It's pretty much just an observation of facts. Nobody's argues with me. When you think about it, that is why Perot was so popular....all he did was identify problems....he seldom proposed solutions.

12. Maybe that's how
we can get people to open up. Do you all think it'd work? Don't mention democrats or republicans or how you dislike them etc. Just simple things like that. Get a nice little heart-to-heart with them.

you should point out we're all immigrants. The only people who aren't are Native Americans, so he would be kicked out too. ;)

13. Sounds mostly Libertarian to me too
The anti-immigration stance, the overall "get outta my business" attitude points in that direction.

Ask what he thinks of the Patriot Act and watch his reaction.

That "closed border" stance has him at direct odds with Bush Co. Some Freepers have been banned from FreeRepublic for expressing their disappointment at Bush's stance re: immigration.

I'd say you could believe him when he says he's a Bush hater.

14. I know someone who
says he believes in liberal issues when he is around me, yet he said he was voting for Bush because at least he knew what he was getting with Bush. He was liberal when I first met him, but then he got handed a pamphlet called "The Color of Crime" that skews the FBI's statistics on race and crime to make it seem as though virtually all violent crimes are committed by black people. Next thing you know he was making racist comments and complaining about immigrants and gay people. My main problem with that...I'm gay. Needless to say, I no longer speak to him. I couldn't take the lies any more.

Believe it or not, people like him are the ones who actually need to have those last minute campaign visits from candidates to "decide" who they are going to vote for. They are liberal one minute and conservative the next. I don't get that.

the Mexican's want it back. His views are all typical right-wing, nasty ass shit stuff that Bush supports. He should be happy with the man.

sure. More liberal than, say, Dallas TX, LOL.

Some very conservative politicians like Duke Cunningham have come out of there, and some other prominent Repubs like Pete Wilson.

21. Sounds like a right-leaning libertarian to me
No real libertarian could possibly support Bush - The chair of the Libertarian Party in my state is a family friend, and I know for a fact that she hates Bush. This is easily the most bloated, invasive, mindlessly expensive administration that the United States has ever seen, from any political party.
