My letter to Newsweek about Martha...
Edited on Sun Mar-06-05 08:58 AM by kris10ep
As we got the play by play of Martha's every move during her first 24 hours after being released, each time I saw a new report, the more apalled I got at the crap the media considers "newsworthy."

My letter to Newsweek:

After seeing Martha Stewart plastered across the front cover of the March 7 Newsweek, I was hesitant to buy the magazine. Then I thought to give you the benefit of the doubt. Who knows? Maybe it was an incredibly slow week for news.
Once I began reading the issue, I became disgusted after I finished "Iraq's Hidden War." I couldn't believe some of the atrocities toward women in Iraq. However, what was most apalling was the fact that Martha graced the cover. With a story about women facing unthinkable horrors and fighting for the rights we daily take for granted, you chose for the cover spot, a woman who acheived much power and success, only to abuse it in an extremely unethical way. I'm not anti-Martha by any means. In fact, I believe it was incredibly unjust to make an example out of her when there are so many big-wigs who get away with the same crime time and again. I do however, view the whole situation as less than newsworthy at this point.
Kudos for the eye-opening article showing the reality of what the Iraqi women must face on a daily basis. Shame on you for demeaning that struggle by suggesting Martha Stewart's release from prison to be a better headline.

1. I basically like Martha Stewart.
AND I agree with your post. Of all the things they should make an effort to publicize, Martha ranks below the atrocities of human rights violations.

11. she didn't even do that
they couldn't prove their case on the insider trading thing, so they got her on obstruction instead.

in short, she went to prison for deleting a message from her answering machine.

3. I'm sick of all celebrities in the news
And mediawhore celebrities in general. EVERYTHING, even a prison term, is spun into how it's made them EVEN better as a person. They never cease to be appalling.

4. This proves my theory that the media only comes alive when there's
a celebrity in the news, not issues concerning the government, Iraq, Iran, Syria, bankruptcy, health insurance, election fraud -- with one exception: Arnold who combines celebrity with the illusion of government.

5. I'll bet Dubya has several copies in the Oval Office.
After all, it pushed Jeff Gannon off the front page.
Wait a minute! Come to think of it the Gannon story wasn't on the front page, or ANY page. Our media is shameful!!

6. I like Martha
I think she got a raw deal, and I agree that she doesn't belong on the front page of anything.

9. You are sick of it because it wasn't news. It was free PR for a woman
who doesn't need it. At least free PR Martha and her company has plenty of money to repair her image which I personally don't think was that badly tarnished in the first place. Anyone who doesn't know that the law used to convict Martha is a very bad law in the first place isn't going to change their mind because of positive spin about Martha in the first place.

If the news media wanted to americans a favor they would have focus on our harmful the law is to our rights as citizens.

10. To make matters worse, the cover was doctored.
It's Martha's head on someone else's body. Howard Fineman said it was supposed to be a joke. Huh? In that case they should have used an SI swim suit model's body. Is Newsweek connected to NBC?
