Are journalist being targeted in Iraq remember this attack..
Are certain journalist being targeted in Iraq. What happened to the Italian journalist in Iraq this weekend was not the first time there has been a confrontation between the military and journalist except in this case the journalist was killed.
Are voices being silenced is the press under attack?
On April 8th 2003 days before the U.S. military overtook Baghdad the Al Jazerra bureau was bombed.
The attack was described in the documentary "Control Room"
Samir Khader, Senior Producer Al Jazeera talking about the description coming over the phone from Al Jazeera's office in Baghdad "There is a plane over us and it's nose is down, which means a formation of attack. And the American planes came and launched the missiles against our office and the explosion killed Tarek Ayyoub."
Also hit during the attack was Abu Dhabi TV and the Palestine hotel where the media was stationed.
Khader "The 1st objective of sending these missiles on the offices of Al Jazerra is you are not siding 100 percent with us against Saddam Hussein so we are going to punish you we are sending these missiles on you to kill you to kill people."
"We have received this message we acknowledge the receipt of this message." The offices are closed down in Baghdad Al Jazzera reporters leave Iraq.
Days after the bombing the U.S. enters Baghdad and Al Jazzera has no reporters on the ground to put there perspective on this part of the war.
Later in the documentary the wife of Tarek Ayyoub has a message for journalist covering the war.
"Please my husband died trying to reveal the truth to the world please do not conceal it for any conditions. Not for the public opinion, not for the American policy, not for the British policy please be honest only for this time for the sake of all those people who died. Innocent people not militia, not people in the army. Please tell the truth only this once thank you very much.
Al Jazeera has a different perspective on the war and so did the Italian journalist.
