What and Where Exactly is the Bankruptcy Bill?
Sorry to be so out of the loop - but has this bill passed and is it a done deal?

Thanks.

1. Probably A Done Deal
The bill appears to be a done deal unless the Democrats filibuster.

2. Ok, but WHAT is the bill?
I've heard about it on here a LOT, but I've not gotten a clear picture of how it makes it harder for one to declare bankruptcy.

On an ironic note, a Bush supporter here in my office was telling me yesterday he's thinking of declaring bankruptcy. He doesn't make a lot of money, has a lot of old debt, etc. He knew nothing about this bill until I mentioned it today. It'd ALMOST be funny if it wasn't so sad (at least he didn't VOTE for Bush... he just likes him, but never votes). I think he's starting to like him less and less. But I couldn't really explain what exactly the bill does.

Anyhow, if someone could point me to a link or explain the bill a little to me I'd be most appreciative. Thanks!

8. A Filibuster Would Kill The Bill
The Democratic Party could organize a filibuster. That would kill it.

10. THERE CAN BE NO FILIBUSTER!!!
They already voted on cloture and 14 Dems voted in favor of cloture.

13. That's Just Great
So the Democratic Party and John Dean could not pressure 14 Democrats to hold the line? Did they try?

Well, we need a real big tent that includes Bush enablers!

5. all i know is that the problems it causes can be avoided only
by not having any debt.

debt is always a bit of a problem, but with this bill it somehow becomes such a problem that it is worth avoiding it by just not having any debt.

11. The bill still hasn't been voted on in the Senate, but will be today
you can watch on Cspan 2, streaming video.

Here's a good diary of what's been
going on and what this bill covers and who
it doesn't cover...

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/3/6/63144/06015

It covers individual bankruptcies, not business
bankruptcies. It doesn't address the loopholes
for the wealthy, those who have houses in Texas
and Florida...

no, it basically screws the little guy on behest
of MBNA and other credit card companies....you know
the ones who charge $25 if you are a minute late
on a monthly payment or charge you 30% in interest.

If you want to find out which politicians got
payola from the credit card companies and banks
go to www.opensecrets.org and go to the bankruptcy
reform link. Go to the 20 top recipients.
