A gun is just an object. If someone wants to kill...breaking off the leg to a table and beating them to death will do...we can't ban tables or make everything out of that nerf material so no one ever gets hurt or killed or molested or permanently disabled. We have to change the people and ourselves. We have to change the way we think about unacceptable behavior in general.
In days past, if a person committed a crime, their own family would rebuke them and disassociate themselves from them. Now it is different. Kids go to prisons to see murderers....the courts here have even ordered a mother to take her son to the state prison to visit his dad who is in there for sexually abusing and killing an 8 year old boy. She said she didn't want her son to associate with any person of that sort but was ordered to do so.
I agree with the standards of yesterday. If a person chooses to engage in criminal behavior...disassociation from friends and loved ones goes along with it....consequences...that is what we lack. Young people don't see them and we as responsible adults don't enforce them. I mean social consequences not legal ones.
I have told my son that if he decides to become a criminal, I am no longer his mother. I didn't raise a criminal...don't associate with them as friends...don't condone what they do or who they've become and until they decide to become responsible members of society again it will stay that way. He told me that in the past he had thought about what I said when, at a moment of anger or peer pressure he had thought about doing something unlawful and remembered that I meant it and wanted to stay in the family more than commit the act.
It might sound hard but I heard the same thing from my father. He said, "Being born into a family doesn't mean the family will let you stay a member no matter what terrible things you might do...familys have limits." and I have hung on to that all of my life.
Crime is a conscious decision.
