<> 6 pm CST -- HEADLINES

<> 6:15 pm -- GUEST 1: MELISSA BOYLE MAHLE

Melissa Boyle Mahle risked her life as a CIA field officer in the Middle East until her departure from the Agency in 2002. As a former clandestine operative and one of a handful of women in the CIA who spoke Arabic during her years there, she has a unique vantage point from which to view the political and operational culture of the agency in the post-cold war climate, and to reveal how the CIA failed to anticipate the 9/11 attacks. Since leaving the government in 2002, Mahle has worked as a private consultant on Middle Eastern political and security affairs. She lives in Virginia.

Her new book, Denial and Deception, spans presidencies from Ronald Reagan to George W. Bush. Mahle provides a vivid personal and historical narrative of how the CIA became a rudderless organization, lost in the post-cold war world. A review by Robert Steele says: "This is, without question, one of the best books available on the intimate subject of the clandestine culture, and it offers some lovely gems and personality assessments that intelligence professionals will appreciate more than the general public."

THE BOOK: Denial and Deception: An Insider's View of the C.I.A. from Iran-Contra to 9/11, by Melissa Boyle Mahle (Nation Books, March 2005)

<> 6:40 pm -- GUEST 2: KURT EICHENWALD

Kurt Eichenwald has written for the New York Times for more than seventeen years, and is a two-time winner of the George Polk Award for Excellence in Journalism and a finalist for the 2000 Pulitzer Prize. His hefty new book (over 700 pages), Conspiracy of Fools, treats the Enron scandal is as a true crime story, rendering complex corporate skulduggery in the form of a page-turning financial thriller.

Eichenwald details the internal battles over turf, ideas, and influence as the company went from one outrageous deal to another, all the time ignoring warning signals inside and outside of the firm from accountants, analysts, and reporters. In a convergence of "shocking incompetence, unjustified arrogance, compromised ethics and an utter contempt for the market's judgment," Enron undertook complicated financing structures that transformed it from a old-line company of pipelines and rigs to one of ever more convoluted financial vehicles.

Eichenwald's previous book, "The Informant'" is currently in development as a major motion picture. He lives in Dallas with his wife and three children.

THE BOOK: "Conspiracy of Fools" by Kurt Eichenwald (Doubleday, March 2005)
