Has MoveOn gone mainstream?
http://www.newsdissector.org/blog/index.php
Several articles on News Dissector try to guess why MoveOn no longer opposes the war in Iraq.

Exerpt:
Whats especially troubling is that MoveON is dropping the war as an issue after a majority of the people (56% in a December poll) now say they now think Iraq was a bad idea. As anti-war sentiment grows and as the US military loses the initiative, MoveOn is pursuing its own "exit strategy." Could the positive but wrong media spin on the Iraq elections have convinced them to drop the issue?

Norman Solomon explains further:

MoveOn.org: Making Peace With the War in Iraq
Groundbreaking group not pushing for U.S. withdrawal

Sadly, it has come to this. Two years after the invasion of Iraq, the online powerhouse MoveOn.org — which built most of its member base with a strong antiwar message — is not pushing for withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq.

With a network of more than three million “online activists,” the MoveOn leadership has decided against opposing the American occupation of Iraq. During the recent bloody months, none of MoveOn’s action alerts have addressed what Americans can do to help get the U.S. military out of that country. Likewise, the MoveOn.org website has continued to bypass the issue — even after Rep. Lynn Woolsey and two dozen cosponsors in the House of Representatives introduced a resolution in late January calling for swift removal of all U.S. troops from Iraq.

1. MoveOn never *WAS* a strong anti-war voice.
Perhaps my memory is failing, but I never perceived MoveOn as
a strong antiwar voice in the first place.

The antiwar voices I've managed to hear tend to be coming from
groups that DU folks seem to like to make fun of.

2. Maybe because MoveOn members think election reform is their #1 concern?
That's what MoveOn members told MoveOn a couple of months ago. Being antiwar
is a no-brainer. We're self-starters on that now now and the movement has gone
mainstream, which is good. Now, let's raise consciousness and get election reform done with the help of MoveOn and other liberal groups.

6. Raise Consciousness?
" Being antiwar is a no-brainer. We're self-starters on that now now and the movement has gone mainstream, which is good. Now, let's raise consciousness ....

Raise consciousness by boycotting the anti-war movement?

So Move-on can't even mention, much less endorse, the March 19th protests because their members have moved on from the insignificant Iraq issue and just want deal with the really important life and death stuff, like election reform? I don't believe that for a moment. I'm sure that an overwhelming majority of their supporters are against the occupation so something else is involved. I can only speculate.

Perhaps some move.on leaders don't want to alienate some "liberal" politicians and financial donors who are opposed to withdrawing from Iraq. You know, we just can't "cut and run" from Iraq like was done in Vietnam. We're building democracy in Iraq!

10. well said,
Eli was quoted in an article someone posted here as saying, "our supporters have a breadth of opinion on the Iraq war." Sounds like a sell out to me. They are NOT supporting an immediate pull out.

On this issue, they have gone mainstream. They were outspoken AGAINST the war early on, but have now backpeddled. Likely due to "certain" donors, as you stated.

12. I guess we are spintering again!
Too bad. I'm going with the progressive, anti-war, alternative media, economic survival fraction.

See ya, MoveOn.

9. Except that MoveOn doesn't seem into that, either.
Unless they've made some moves in the last few weeks.

Shortly after the election, the house parties told MoveOn they wanted to work on reform. They were taken aback and -- as far as I could tell -- ignored us all.

13. they were dragged along into supporting the Boxer Rebellion
they sent an email to their list one day before Barbara Boxer stood up.

MoveOn is endorsing and raising money for select progressive candidates but I can't see that they are very focused on election reform yet.

4. how many ways can U oppose
Edited on Mon Mar-14-05 03:03 PM by xxqqqzme
invasion/occupation? yellow rogue invaded and occupied. Is any amount of protests, lettrs, emails likely to stop him? change his mind?

It is like Howard Dean reponding to the reporter's question about Iraq - He replied, 'You know my views on the invasion, you can look then up. I'm not going to repeat them.'

The invasion/occupation is a crime against humanity. Until the criminals R brought down, U and I do what we can but I don't need MoveOn to rally or be a central action point. We know what has 2 B done and there R others that have taken up the banner. MoveOn has 'moved on' to other issues. There is no dearth of compelling issues as was made clear by the house parties last week. Voter Verified Paper Ballots seems to be heading up the list. While I will join the 3/19 demonstration in LA, my energies R directed @ VVPB and getting it on the ballot for steroid boy's special election (if that happens)

5. I would be surprized if ANSWER were pro occupation
But MoveOn was formed after the 2000 election, and consistently, their focus has been on the defeat of the Bush administration, and its criminal cohort.

MoveOn at best is peripherally involved with the issue of Iraq, but do a bang up job at exposing the Bush** admin's corporatist agenda.

8. Bingo!
I first heard of them back in the summer of 2002 from an anti war person, who was part of a group organized by MoveOn to go talk to Senators about opposition to the impending war. She had been involved with MoveOn since the Starr era, and hence I learned of the organization and thir origins.

14. More like putting your resources...
where they might do some good.

It's not at all unusual for some organizations to work primarily on issues that are coming up for a vote, or are otherwise moving along. While many people are getting sick of Iraq, there's no real movement to pull the troops out, and it's not really MoveOn's job to start one.

I'm on one of the teams that were formed last Thursday at house parties all over the country. Things aren't fully organized yet, but we have a call-in day and DC rally (headlined by Sen. Byrd) on Wednesday, with the idea of flooding the Senate switchboard with our complaint.

This one is about the "nuclear option" since that's a close vote coming up, and ifFrist pulls it off we are guranteed courts full of rightwing judges. It's current, and it's urgent.

Future months will have other urgent business to deal with.

It's probably been mentioned on DU before, but to join a team:

17. You have to be realistic. History will put it all in perspective (neocons
had to desperately & quickly undo the mess USA right wing and neocons did to the middle east or face a growing Islam that they created with their pro-strongmen policies).

So history is on our side. Relax. The people of Iraq need to not die in huge numbers (after 30 years included the this war). The bestest way to ensure they will not die in huge numbers is to make sure their army is strong before we leave. UN agrees.

History will set us free. For now... we want peace in Israel and Arab & Muslim youth to run with the idea that the USA has finally set them free to pursue democracy.

So let it happen and do not be afraid. History will properly frame Iraq and they have the pictures of Bush Sr., Rumsfield, etc. to prove it.

Saddam is a monster and the funny thing about the trial will be that the ways in which he 'terrorized' and 'wore out' his populace will remind Americans of their current WH. This white house, the neocons & rovbots do use the tools of sociopaths. So look forward to the Saddam Hussein trials because they will only back up your understanding of what fascism is... and they will put the Bush Jr. WH in a bad light.

Relax.
