Please help with R.A.G.E. !!!!

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is now using temporary guidelines for Safe Air Standards. This is not only for "ambient air" in the great out-of-doors, but the indoor air that each of us and all of our family, friends, and neighbors breathe every day. Believe it or not, although the EPA is supposed to be looking out for your best interests, they aren't. Surprise, surprise!

The EPA's Science Advisory Board is now in the process of reviewing and drafting a toxicity assessment for TCE (trichloroethyylene). Those of you who have read the book "A Civil Action" or watched the movie, are familiar with TCE. It's known as "degreaser fluid" in industry, and is one of the most dangerous contaminates in our environment.

Guess what? Strong lobbies from large industries, including the US military industrial complex (perhaps the single largest source of TCE contamination in the country) are pushing for a enient guideline involving micrograms per cubic meter, than what is conservatively recognized as a threat to "healthy environment" guidelines for humans and other living things.

A coalition of groups is urging the EPA to follow the guidelines proposed by independent scientists, not those on the pay-roll of industry. The coalition is putting a focus on the safety issues involving children.

Please take the time to help us make our voices heard, by signing this online petition to the US EPA Administrator, asking for healthy and reasonable toxicity screening and action levels. The grass-roots group RAGE is hoping to get 6,000 to 10,000 signatures; several other organizations, from NYS to California, are taking part.

I certainly appreciate your help. This involves the clean-up of a fairly large portion of what are called "the triple cities" around Binghamton, NY. There was a cancer cluster found there, which claimed the lives of a number of youngsters. It has been a long and acrimonious fight on the part of the neighborhoods involved. I get a kick out of the name "RAGE," because it is a group of generally middle class professional families .... who have found out that they have been had by the government they once trusted.

Hello - we can make a difference!

I want to make clear: I don't live in the area that is so heavily contaminated near Binghamton. But a few years back, a number of people from Binghamton approached me, in part from work I've been involved with on other SuperFund Sites.

The level of TCE, among other things, that pollutes Binghamton and the surrounding areas is reason for alarm. There have been "suspected" cancer clusters reported. But in NYS, the Dept. of Health is not interested in helping people: it is an advocate for industry. I am not sure the exact numbers at this time, but there was a time I did .... at a public meeting on the Sidney Center/Richardson Hill SuperFund Sites, the NYSDOH reps said there was no evidence of a cluster; I asked them how many of the past 385 reported clusters had they found "negative"? Of course, it was 385. They refuse to admit that TCE and PCBs are related to health concerns.

In the Binghamton/triple cities area, there is a neighborhood that has had a luekemia cluster. I don't give a shit if the DOH says "no." There is.

So I'm asking people to help, because this type of contamination hurts any person who comes in contact, including and especially children.

Chemicals flow downstream. So this problem in Binghasmton will flow down the Susquehanna River, to communities located below it. And it will flow downstream in time, and will damage the quality of life for families inthe future.

Please support these people. Their willingness to advocate for their neighborhoods may one day help you, if you have to deal with the EPA.
