I response to an Orwellian graphic proclaiming that "Freedom is a Privilege" located on the weekly flyer of Mill's Fleet Farm, a chain of retail outlets catering to farmers, farmer-wannabes, and do-it-youselfers in the "Deep-North" (WI,MN,etc) My Father shot off the following email:
"I noticed a flag in your weekly flyer with the text "Freedom is a Privilege".
I would like to remind you that in the United States, at least for now, freedom is not a privilege; it is a right, as written in the Declaration of Independence, "We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, LIBERTY and the Pursuit of Happiness".
Freedom, as our right, should be demanded and we should not settle for anything less. To consider it a privilege to be meted out at the whim of those in power is to voluntarily give it up and should be considered treasonous."
He got the following response today:
"Dear Mr. xxxxxxx:
Thank you for your email of March 11, 2005.
I appreciate your comments concerning the flag in our weekly advertising flyer with the text "Freedom is a Privilege."
Our family has served in the Civil War, WWI, WWII and the Korean War, and we have continued to strongly support our military men and women. We are proud of our troops that are fighting for us, as freedom is not free. We strive to remind everyone of the debt of gratitude we owe to our military and veterans. It is because of them that we have the "Privilege" of enjoying our "Right". Again, Mr. xxxxxxx, thank you for emailing us.
Sincerely,
Stewart C. Mills, Jr."
Apparently this company does not feel that they need any business from those who do not agree with the advertised sentiment. Screw Fleet Farm!!!
