Permafrost is melting..how will they get the oil out from ANWR?
When they built the Alaska Pipeline from the North slope to Prince William sound they built it on what was then "Perma Frost". That was in the late sixties and early seventies. Since then what was considered "Perma" is not quite....The Permafrost has been starting to melt and cause the pipeline to sag in numerous places. This process is escalating rapidly and causing much concern among environmentalist and numerous others. Now that they know that the Perma Frost is not really "Perma" how will they distribute the oil from the Arctic Coast? Because of major warming trends this last decade the ice cap has moved off shore about thirty miles or so (unheard of) so shipping can occur for about four to six months a year but what then? I think this is a major consideration that needs to be addressed before drilling takes place.

4. After a lot of hub-bubbing they will use the cheapest half assed
method that is available, it will be a god damn mess, but after it happens it will be too late to do anything about, they will pay some
fines and say they are sorry.

7. They only drill in winter
And you've just explained why. It isn't to keep from disrupting the migration, calving and mating, like they say; it's because they can't drill year round because they've already fucked up the environment.

Attorney General investigating Big Dig contractors amid safety concerns

By Associated Press
Wednesday, March 16, 2005

BOSTON - The state attorney general is investigating two of the largest contractors on the $14.6 billion Big Dig highway project amid new questions about the project's safety.

The civil investigation into Bechtel/Parsons Brinckerhoff and Modern Continental Construction Co. focuses on what Attorney General Thomas Reilly called poor oversight and shoddy work on the project, a system of bridges and tunnels plagued by cost overruns and riddled by leaks and other flaws.

...

The outside engineer who led an investigation into leaks at the project said in a March 9 letter to the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority that he can no longer vouch for the safety of its tunnels.
Engineering specialist Jack K. Lemley wrote that he was ``unable to express an opinion as to the safety of the I-93 portion of the Central Artery.''
Gov. Mitt Romney responded by asking the state's highest court Tuesday for an opinion on whether he can fire Matthew Amorello, chairman of the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority, which oversees the Big Dig.

9. This Is Probably The Reason The Oil Companies Are No Longer
Edited on Wed Mar-16-05 04:27 PM by loindelrio
interested.

As you mentioned, the Alaska pipeline is in trouble due to melting permafrost. Use of the pipeline is an important part of the cost effectiveness of ANWR production.

My guess, they have run the numbers and the cost of polar oil on melting permafrost will be far greater than syncrude from coal gasification or GTL.

Big Oil Steps Aside in Battle over Arctic
By Jeff Gerth
The New York Times

http://www.truthout.org/issues_05/E022205Y.shtml

But if Mr. Bush's drilling plan passes in Congress after what is expected to be a fierce fight, it may prove to be a triumph of politics over geology.

Once allied, the administration and the oil industry are now far apart on the issue. The major oil companies are largely uninterested in drilling in the refuge, skeptical about the potential there. Even the plan's most optimistic backers agree that any oil from the refuge would meet only a tiny fraction of America's needs.

. . .

A Bush adviser says the major oil companies have a dimmer view of the refuge's prospects than the administration does. "If the government gave them the leases for free they wouldn't take them," said the adviser, who would speak only anonymously because of his position. "No oil company really cares about ANWR," the adviser said, using an acronym for the refuge, pronounced "an-war."

10. "Expensive environmental compromise" is such a '70s idea...
we've "Moved On" and now it's back to Gold Rush "rape and plunder" tactics. El Rushbo has assured us that we puny humans can't possibly damage the environment. Get out the water cannons 'cause there's gold in thar...

It's good to be the party that counts the votes.
