Behind the neocon nomination (countries against Wolfowitz)
Behind the neocon nomination
By Rhys Blakely, Times Online

While Africa battles to keep the wolf from the door, Europe’s leaders are lining up to keep Wolfowitz from the World Bank.

Germany and France are "underwhelmed" at the prospect of the US Deputy Secretary of Defense - widely regarded as the architect of America's war in Iraq - taking the helm of an institution which is supposed to be battling only poverty. The 2 billion who, according to the Bank itself, live on less than $2 a day deserve a champion with the relevant know how, say the dissenters.

"We need someone with professional experience in helping people to escape from poverty, which Mr Wolfowitz does not have," said Professor Jeffrey Sachs – the Nobel Prize-winning director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University, and adviser to Kofi Annan.

1. My guess is Wolfie's charge will be other than to fight poverty, but the
proof will be in the pudding.

2. They will use World Bank Loans to force regressive policies

As they have in the past. "Look, mr. President, we have the money for your kingdom, but we need to know if you are serious about reforming your country. To show us you are serious, see that all labor law gets taken off the books, and have your police crush any unions that might exist. You do that, and we can provide you with any money you want."

3. The purpose of Wolfowitz's, and for that matter Bolton's
nomination is to essentially destroy those institutions from within. While I have a poor opinion of the World Bank, it remains a symbol of collective governance, just like the UN. Institutions like this have to be disemboweled so that they cannot offer any resistance to bush. The shell will remain, but that's only to provide the facade of international accord.

9. "We’re dealing with a country that can finance its own reconstruction"
“There’s a lot of money to pay for this (war) that doesn’t have to be U.S. taxpayer money, and it starts with the assets of the Iraqi people"

-wolfowitz

He's open about stealing other people's assets; too bad he was also $300 billion US taxpayer's money later dead wrong.

10. This is rebranding to make neocons look like they have hearts when
everything they do involves using the tools of sociopaths: and as a result teaching others in the world to use those tools too.
