this answer to peak oil?

if it were available to you, would you use it? PRT would be like your very own roller coaster.

2. Did you even see the movie "Singles"?
Early '90s film, set in Seattle, with grunge music soundtrack.

Anyway, one of the main characters jobs is convincing city leadership how "cool" a mass transpotation system for the city could be. He pours everything into it.

In the end, the city manager/mayor listens politely to everything he says, looks him in the eye and says, "People love their cars".

Same thing here. As cool, cost effective, etc etc as it is, Americans will never give up their cars. The best we can due is change the fuel source, IMO.

4. Never saw the movie
but i do agree, people love their cars. The non-profit i work for tho is in the business of lessening as much traffic as possible in the City, and we explore all options. this wa sone of the cooler ones i've run across.

5. Not everyone loves their cars.
Some of us would happily give up driving, if we could.

Stuff like this might never totally replace cars, but they might replace SOME cars. Which would help.

7. It's possible that the end goal would be a hybrid
Something that runs on a mass transit system but is personalized to you. Like that car Tom Cruise had in Minority report perhaps.

Think how many cars could be removed from the road. Imagine living in an area where you could get nearly anywhere you wanted without owning a car, having car insurance...repairs...all that. Imagine how this would necessitate people to take more frequent short walks, getting fresh air and exercise.

A more extreme version of this was imagined for the movie MINORITY REPORT -- those had waterfall-like dives attached to buildings with rotate-to-level passenger cabins. In that movie your own personal vehicle actually opened up right into your apartment. I can't imagine why if people wanted to pay for a connection to their house and have their own customized vehicle they could summon at any time that this couldn't also be integrated. I imagine apartment buildings could maintain their own stations.

It looks fun, environmentally friendly, useful, and convenient. Therefore it would be beaten down by the administration and the automakers.
