Porter Goss at Senate hearing : "We don't do torture".....
..from msnbc..
CIA Director Porter Goss on Thursday defended U.S. interrogation practices amid ongoing criticism that Americans’ treatment of prisoners amounts to torture. Testifying before the Senate Armed Services Committee, Goss said that professional interrogation has been a “useful and necessary way to obtain information that saves innocent lives and protects combat forces.”

“The U.S. government does not engage in or condone torture,” Goss said.

Sen. John McCain said he was concerned about what he sees as 'a lack of policy on prisoners'- but what could HE possibly know about torture, anyway. I can't f*cking take it.

4. interesting that he didn't say
The US Government condemns, deplores or prevents the use of torture; only that "we" don't engage or condone it. Neither does he mention anything about what private and independent contractors do.

So what I read this to mean is that - Abu Garb and Gitmo not withstanding - the members of the US military and US intelligence personnel do not themselves torture, but what other people might do is up to them and who are we to stop them, and if they get information we have no problem using it and paying them well for getting it for us.

And they had so much issue with Clinton's crafty word play with "is".......

So hypocritical and disgusting, since we're talking about human lives here and not an extra-marital affair between consenting adults.

8. Of course not. That's why we bought all those nice, white Gulfstreams.
To transport our captives in privacy and comfort to little hellholes that will.

The corporate jets make it a bit more expensive to offshore, of course.

9. Speaking of renditions
I'm doing some research. Have you (or anyone else reading) heard any official explanation for why this is getting done? I mean, I know Uzbekistan is lovely this time of year, but surely they've offered some 'official line' for why they're renditioning detainees there, i.e., not to torture them.

12. You want to know about renditions to Uzbekistan, specifically?
Or, are you offering that as an example of a typical sort of tortuous hellhole?

Welcome to DU, rummyelendil!
