Has Bill Maher been drinking the Kool-Aid?
Any body watching CNN? Bill Maher is now a Bushco shill. Wonder how much they're paying him? He seemed to say our reason for invading Iraq was to spread freedom & it's working. Anybody have a different take on what he said?

2. Sadly, that is indeed what he said and meant,
though I never before heard him say that Poppy had less of a reason to go to Iraq that Jr. Yep, Bill's gone all conservative/kiss-ass on us and it's been noticed during his last 2 shows as well as his hit and run interviews.

3. Haven't seen him on HBO
Loved him on Comedy Central, tolerated him on the Network. Maybe the drugs & supermodels have finally got to him.

4. here's doing a rhetorical thing -imo- with giving the devils their due
he's a sophist at heart. poltical speech. incorrect or not. everything's a relation of ideas. he sees the more interesting angle on bushco's foreign policy as being rhetorical. "look... dictators are falling... " it's uninteresting to a rhetorical comedian to actually look and see what is going on. it's all about what people say.

this sets him up for a big left hook when it becomes common knowledge that the policies failed. he keeps his nose clean and becomes the kind of "critical thinker" asked to "read trends."

Edited on Thu Mar-17-05 08:28 PM by checks-n-balances
on the website with the poll? Speaking of CNN, he so looks like Anderson Cooper with shorter hair. Could be his brother!

BTW, The two pictures you posted on this thread and your sig line just made me LOL. Hilarious!!! And...I love BBQ, too!

Not a political site, but we all need relief from the Bushco & nothing like good food to help.

6. Maher believes he is being....
...intellectually honest.

He still called Bush a liar about the WMD's, but seems to believe that some form of freedom from tyranny is on the march in the Middle East and is giving Bush the credit for championing it.

I think it is way too early to be making these claims, but I guess some people believe it is time to get out in front of events.

The fact of the matter is, if the people in the Middle East do succeed in forcing democratic elections and getting rid of some of their dictators and monarchs - Bush is going to get a lot of the credit whether he deserves any or not. Just as conventional wisdom has taken hold that Reagan brought down the Soviet Union and its East European satellites, Bush will be heralded for freeing and democratizing the Middle East.

You can just see this coming from a million miles away.

7. Reagan didn't single handidly bring down the Soviet Union
I hope most people don't give Reagan all the credit for defeating the Soviet Union.

Yes, his two terms were important.

Don't let anybody forget that the Soviet Union didn't topple because of only a Repulican President.

The Soviet Union was defeated with a long and steady approach across muliple administrations.

This is the same tactic that should have been used with Iraq.

11. If anyone can be said to have "single handedly" done in the USSR. . .
that would have to be George F. Kennan. . . and he disavowed a singular reponsibility.

switched the channel.

He's doing it again - just like before the Iraq invasion.

Rah Rah Rah. It's sickening.

Here we go again folks.

What an idiot - "the Iraq war was fought/started/etc. because we wanted to liberate and spread democracy?" Just where was this idiot back when.

I do not seem to ONCE being begged, pleaded or conviced on that reason to invade - it was SOLELY about WMD, Mushroom clouds, and Immediate threat of Nuclear attack!

And, Maher was one of the chief cheerleading whores for this dispicable crime.

And if he ever does anything I agree with, I chalk it up to the "broken clock" excuse which is the exception to his norm.

13. I HEARD Him On CNN....
I also SAW his show last Friday, but won't be seeing it THIS Friday!

How is it possible to say Democracy if flourishing in ME when Iraq is still such a mess. Simply because a few things are happening right now does not mean, in any way that this is going to be permanent.

Guess another one bites the DUST!! Who's next... Al Franken???

How many people had to die to come to some simplistic conclusion that can't be proved in any way, shape or form??? As for Maher's statement, Go Figure!!!!

19. Maher's an independent. He takes one side or the other, depending
on the issue. He's been that way, as long as I've been watching him. Gotta hand it to him. He has balls. He says what he wants and what he thinks.

22. I don't think it takes balls
to switch sides just because the situation in Iraq seems better momentarilly. It's whoring and actually quite cowardly.

I would say it takes more balls to actually stick to your guns and call this war for what it is - unjustified and wrong.

20. Maher turned yellow after the backlash for his 9-11 comments.
He has been a cowardly shill ever since. He will do anything to stay on the air. We have no use for him and he will end up on the trash heap when all is said and done.

25. My take on Maher's most recent show:
If you watched the last "Real Time with Bill Maher" you can plainly see that Bill made the distinction that Bush lied about the war, but may have been stupid enough to help the Iraqi people without knowing it.

However, I wanted to point out a number of points that he didn't make:

1. The war was never about freeing Iraqis
2. The war was never about spreading democracy
3. The war was never about revenging Bush's father

Bush didn't stumble into anything - he knew exactly what he was doing.

26. I Think There's More To It Than A Dennis Miller-Like Sellout

Something weird and upsetting has happened to Maher's show this season. It's not just that he's spewing a bunch of Bush-friendly statements where he didn't before. The guests he has now are clunky and non-responsive; Maher seems sullen and listless, and is stumbling over his lines; the timing and overall quality of the show seems shot to hell. I'd sure like to know what's going on; it's one of the most dramatic downturns in a TV series that I've ever witnessed, and I'm not happy about it......
