Figured out why Akaka and Inouye voted for drilling in ANWR
Edited on Thu Mar-17-05 09:24 PM by Goathead
It was sitting in front of me the whole time and I was even affected by it living in Hawai'i. It is because gasoline is approaching $3.00 a gal. in Hawai'i and Hawai'i is it's own little political microcosm. Sitting right in front of me and I couldn't see it. I guess I let the emotion of this environmental catastrophe waiting to happen cloud my judgement. One must try to step back and look at the broader picture from time to time.

Edit:clarity

2. Do you know what effect ANWR will have on gas prices in Hawaii?
None.

10. but I do blame them
enough games, enough "bigger picture" stuff, its not like we (the nation, humanity, the environment) lost by repub votes.

No spin makes it ok.

And can you imagine the momentum Dems and conscious Americans, and the environment would have had after such a vote?

Nope. To hell with both of them and Landreiu, as far as I'm concerned.

Once its done - once the trucks and the plows and the pipes and the drills enter the area, its done. Can't make another one.

Big, big deal.

Why they voted to allow this in no way outweighs why they should have voted not to allow it.

7. Doesn't matter
Yes, I know that "the market" drives the price of oil. These two Senators have to at least have the appearance that they are doing something for their constituents.

14. Sorry
I think elected officials, especially US Senators, should be held to a higher standard than just the "appearance that they are doing something for their constituents."

15. Absolutely
In Hawaii politics though, it's all about appearances and who your uncle is connected with. Nepotism and corruption is so common place that nobody gives it a second thought.

5. Okay tinfoil time...
Edited on Thu Mar-17-05 09:34 PM by rockedthevoteinMA
Maybe they voted for it, and then today the Medicaid cuts were voted down, and now the budget may not pass, so the drilling won't go through?

edit: Like to get the Repukes hopes up... :tinfoilhat:

16. Or maybe
So we can bash Republicans in '06 for drilling in ANWR, even though they won't be able to because there won't be a budget resolution.

Hmmm...do you think Democrats can possibly be so Rovian??

21. I wish... now that I read it, I doubt it. Though Dean is at the head
of the DNC - so it's possible.

6. Ok, you agree with their vote.....now why doesn't anyone of them
get off their butt and write a bill that would provide alternative energy. ANWR is a bandaid at best and certainly putting your finger in the dike has been proven to be an exercise in futility - we're wasting valuable time arguing about this while again ignoring the elephant in the room. We have become such a pushover society and it seems we no longer want to solve problems - just push them aside and let the next guy worry about them.

8. I don't agree with their vote.
ANWR is important to me. Just because I paid high gas prices in Hawaii doesn't mean I am in favor of drilling in one of the last untrammeled wildernesses on the planet.

Check this article for some fairly detailed info on why Akaka and Inouye voted with the Rethugs on ANWR.

bring down oil prices?

It's so fucking bizarre.

Or else there's some defense industry angle, something both Akaka and Inouye share an affinity for.

20. The Broader Picture?
I'm confused. If "constituents" can't see that survival depends on a healthy environment then the picture must be fuzzy. Emotions are the touchstone to a deeper way of seeing.

22. It's because Hawaii and Alaska have always worked together
Hawaii and Alaska are outlier states -- they get ignored by the lower 48. the only way they can have any political clout is to form a bloc of their own. During the years i lived in hawaii, I can't think of many times when Inouye didn't vote the way Alaska did -- and vice versa. It's just a reality of politics.

if finding new areas to drill will slow down the war plans for empire.
