Please, please, make sure you have a living will

Yes, this includes you, youngsters, college kids for whom the whole idea of mortality and wills is foreign. You never know. Especially now as spring break is around the corner. Accidents can happen and you could end up in a vegetative state, with no brain waves, but with functional body, thanks to tubes coming in and out.

Think about it. If you want to stay alive as long as possible, fine. But if you do not want any measures to keep you alive, please write this down. Talk to family and friends. Make sure that your wishes are knows. This way, if the worse happens, you will do your family and friends, complete strangers, state assemblies and the court system a favor and your wishes will be followed.

...just to be clear, its a separate document dealing with property only in most states. The living will is a separate document with separate requirements. Not only that, but my experience (I'm an estate planning attorney) is that people don't look at the living trust or a will regarding these types of instructions (including funeral and burial) until its too late.

Make sure you know the law in your area regarding actions that must be taken by EMS. Your living will doesn't apply if paramedics are legally required to do everything in their power to revive you.
