FDR Democrats, Old Timers and Historians....Help me out.
Edited on Thu Mar-17-05 10:53 PM by Quixote1818
Fill us in on all the great legislation that has lasted almost a lifetime and improved all our lives that was created by a Democratic President and a Democratic congress? I am talking about when Democrats controlled everything!!! When we could push our vision through in the same but opposite way Monkey Face and all his ditto heads are pushing through their crap that will take years and years and years to fix!

Up2Late posted the following and it got me thinking:

When Democrats control the WH and the Congress, we get things like Social Security, the 1964 Voting Rights Act and Medicare.

When the Repukes control the WH AND the Congress, the Rich get Richer, and the other 98% of Americans get totally SCREWED.

5. A good act to have. And, also, that's not the most
flattering pic of Clinton. Looks like he's holding imaginary breasts...

Of course, the DLC is loaded with boobs so I'm sure he'd feel right at home.

10. It is a GREAT picture of Clinton
Edited on Fri Mar-18-05 02:33 PM by Freddie Stubbs
It show him in the animated speaking style which endeared him to millions of America. It also highlights his background as a former leader of the DLC, which advocated may of the policies he implemented during his presidency.

I'm not sure that I would classify DLC members like Mark Warner or Eliot Spitzer as boobs.

4. Not sure about other Dem controlled periods, but FDR's
New Deal established the trend, for sure.
In response to the crisis of the Depression, FDR temporarily closed the banks to quell further panic, and instituted both short and long term emergency programs. Today we call them the 'alphabet programs' (I guess you could blame FDR for the blight of acronyms we have to live with now :) ) -- they included the Agricultural Adjustment Administration (AAA), the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), the National Recovery Administration (NRA), and the Public Works Administration (PWA). His administration also provided federal assistance for farmers, tightened banking and finance regulations, and established the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). In 1934, after the initial bout of recovery programs, the Democratic Congress founded the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and passed the Trade Agreements Act and the National Housing Act. The 2nd New Deal, that went from 1935 to 1941, continued the relief and recovery measures. In 1935, social security was established, along with the National Youth Administration and Work Projects Administration. The Fair Labor Standards Act was passed in 1938, and the Revenue Acts of 1935, 1936, and 1937 helped regulate taxes.

And it goes on and on . . .
Does that help?
:-)

12. Thanks for the welcome, Quixote
I've been reading (lurking?) for over a year -- DU has become my island of sanity in an increasingly insane world.
Don't have too many worthwhile comments, but I'm a historian, so this one was right up my alley!
Thanks again

16. And, not part of the New Deal, but equally important....
FDR's GI Bill of Rights. GI home loans, GI small business loans, GI farm loans, GI school education....I think the GI Bill of Rights put this nation on an equal footing and was singularly responsible for reenergizing the middle class.

7. FEMA Carter
And the Dept of Energy which if we'd paid attention to we wouldn't be in this mess today.

I like to go back to the earliest days of our country and prove to these nincompoops that government assistance is as old as the country itself.

FEMA History

The Federal Emergency Management Agency - a former independent agency that became part of the new Department of Homeland Security in March 2003 - is tasked with responding to, planning for, recovering from and mitigating against disasters. FEMA can trace its beginnings to the Congressional Act of 1803. This act, generally considered the first piece of disaster legislation, provided assistance to a New Hampshire town following an extensive fire. In the century that followed, ad hoc legislation was passed more than 100 times in response to hurricanes, earthquakes, floods and other natural disasters.

By the 1930s, when the federal approach to problems became popular, the Reconstruction Finance Corporation was given authority to make disaster loans for repair and reconstruction of certain public facilities following an earthquake, and later, other types of disasters. In 1934, the Bureau of Public Roads was given authority to provide funding for highways and bridges damaged by natural disasters. The Flood Control Act, which gave the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers greater authority to implement flood control projects, was also passed. This piecemeal approach to disaster assistance was problematic and it prompted legislation that required greater cooperation between federal agencies and authorized the President to coordinate these activities.

9. I didn't know FEMA became part of Homeland Security Dept?!
Shrubco will be "skimming" money there too! Particularly since they thrive on "disaster."

Just think, in the first full year FEMA was part of HS, there were four (count 'em, FOUR) Hurricanes in Florida in 2004! Lucky Jeb that God let him over-see all that Disaster rebuilding fund money! And how much is missing?

11. A Truly Great Man He Was
Without a doubt in the top three of great Presidents.

FDR took a dust bowl of a country, with an economy of a Eastern European
country, and planted the seeds that blossomed into the greatest middle
class in human history - a middle class that had more purchasing power
than most countries.

Sadly, Bush appears to be on the way to destroying it all.
I truly believe that the elite, Bush's base, really do hate
the middle class.

Has America seen it's best days, is it on the down slope
of it's apex ?
