celebrating Easter decades ago.....anyone remember the dyed
baby chicks for sale at dime stores?

they were dyed pastel colors and put on low tables with high ledges

kids/families would buy a few......how many lived longer than a day or so with all the 'attention' from the little kids????

1. Perhaps I blotted that out.
It sounds awful.

4. Little Green Turtles
I remember the little green turtles, although they were on sale throughout the year where I lived. They were kind of a "starter" pet -- if you could show your parents you could take care of the turtle, it could make it easier to convince them to let you get a cat or a dog.

5. I was too late for that, but Mom tells the tales.
She and her 5 brothers usually got them, or rabbit-bunnies, for Easter. Living on a farm, most of them made it, only to be put in the hen house or the rabbit hutches and to be later used as a sunday dinner.

Mom is not real keen on pets to this day, and is probably not the best pet-parent out there because of it.

6. I think that was the point
The parents got the duckies and chicks specifically because they figured that they'd be dead within a couple of days what with all the kids hugging and squeezing them; the kids would cry and then they'd be on to the next thing.

My sister and I got chicks one year. One died, but the other actually turned into a chicken and got sent to a farm -- at least that's the story our parents gave us. I'm pretty sure it ended up on someone's dinner plate. My college roommate said that an Easter chick she got also managed to survive to chickenhood. My best friend from elementary school had a neighborhood friend with a pet duck who was also an Easter survivor.
