How will the melting of Alaska's tundra affect oil drilling there?
Although I don't have a source at hand, I've read that, due to global warming, the tundra is melting at a record pace in the Arctic. I assume Alaska will be melting even faster than farther north. Along with ecological disasters, such as release of poisonous fumes from eons of compacted rotten material suddenly being released into the atmosphere, I wonder how the oil companies will be able to deal with this situation. Seems like the ground conditions are going to be completely different from what they have planned for and the equipment won't be stable. My guess is that there's going to be a major disaster when (but hopefully never) the drilling is initiated.

1. "poisonous fumes from eons of compacted rotten material"
Wouldn't that be primarily methane? Greenhouse gas? It will only exacerbate the problem and further speed the melting.

They won't be able to work there because the physical conditions will be changing on a monthly basis. Engineers design for one thing, and then it changes, and they change, and it changes again. Costs will be ten times their projections, and take twice as long. With any luck, by the time they figure this out we will have a renewable resource economy, possible within 15 years, if we apply ourselves.

2. Yes, I've heard that the gases will accelerate the meltdown.
It's hard to believe that these companies are so stupid they have not factored in all this. But maybe, just maybe the problems they're going to encounter will buy us time to get a progressive government in place, and then end the whole disastrous adventure.
