MSM Insanity - Shiavo Story On Top All Morning
My parents are visiting and we've had CNN on for several hours (not my choice); NOTHING else except the Shiavo case - interview with her brother; parents; doctors. It's all PRO keeping her alive. Her parents claim she's got the mental abilities of a 6-11 month old. If that's the case, can't they just remove the feeding tube and teach her how to eat? And what's with putting make-up on the unfortunate woman to make her appear more "alive"? Ugh.

Anyway, I don't usually watch this much cable news. Truly disgusting the way the media and her family keep whoring this story. Wonder how much her parents are being paid by the Bushies.

1. "It doesn't matter WHAT you watch...it only matters THAT you watch."
I think it was Neil Postman who said that.

2. no surprise
How can Bushco and the Reeptiles continue to rape, rampage, and pillage the poor and working classes of this country unless the news is full of stupid, sensationalist, fundie stories: Peterson; Jackson; Schiavo; Yates; Stewart; etc. etc. etc...... ad infinitum

3. Full court press by the Reich Wing to push their values
But ask one of them if this is God's will!

7. Every value they have puts them in charge of others, our bodies, our
education, our judicial system. I thought they were for individualism and against government intervention. Oh, wait, that is unless it is pro their "value" system.

13. They are against spending government money on any thing
except war.
But they want the government to pass laws that decide how we live, and think. They have become the party of forced values.

4. Of course it's on top
She's scheduled to a death sentence today.

She can't eat because of physical, not mental disabilities. Coordination needed to chew and swallow food is very complex. When you brain is severely damaged, it drasticallly effects oral motor control.

What's wrong with Terri wearing makeup? She's in her 40s! In our culture, most middle-aged women wear makeup, esp when getting their pictures taken.

5. We're on opposite sides here I see
I see her wearing make-up as wrong because of the reason for it. She isn't choosing to wear it.

10. When someone dies they put make on that person even if they didn't
ask for it. Sure, most women might have worn it when they lived, but men didn't. I see nothing wrong with the make up.

That said, I wish they would let her go in peace as she would have wanted.

17. oh?
You don't know that. Perhaps her mom held up the makeup and asked her if she would like some. Perhaps Terri gave her eye contact which is her communication for "yes". Perhaps Terri smiled.

Wearing makeup is normal for our culture. I see nothing wrong with it at all.

11. However, a mental disorder got her to a place of death
Edited on Fri Mar-18-05 12:13 PM by Catt03
She had/has an eating disorder, which is a mental health issue.

19. No mental disabilities?
Edited on Fri Mar-18-05 12:55 PM by DefenseLawyer
Despite what some paid "experts" have speculated about, all of her doctors have said that she has no brain activity beyond that which controls basic involuntary activity. The has no cognitive ability. Her eeg is a flatline. She is not waking up, she is not "stuck inside her body" wanting to communicate. She is gone. If not having any brain activity is not a mental disability then I guess I don't know what is. This case has been thoroughly argued in the courts, everybody got due process and their chance to make their case. In the end it was determined that she is in a permanent vegetative state, without a living will or other evidence, her next of kin gets to determine what is best. Sorry you don't agree with his decision to carry out what the courts have agreed is his decision to make, but you really don't have a vote in the matter. Personally, I wouldn't want you having a vote about my life in that situation either- and I doubt very much that you would care so much what my opinion was, were you faced with such a tragic decision involving your own husband or wife. She's not coming back. Sometimes reality is sad, but it doesn't make it any less real.

9. I agree about the make-up...
...do they realize that they are putting fushia lipstick and mascara on a woman who has no functioning cerebral cortext?

It's really sad and disturbing.

What next? Will they prop her up in the teacups at Disneyland for a photo op?

"See!! She blinked when the ride got going really fast!"

These parents, the media and these religious right wackos who have NO respect for life. They are a bunch of rabid, selfish, misguided monsters.

12. I agree, except for the deluded parents. I think they are so sad that
even having this shell of a body that was their daughter means more to them than letting her go peacefully to God (since that is what they say they believe.)and allowing everyone involved in this to have another purpose in life. What if they had given all the time and money spent on this cause helping to fund a rehabilitation clinic where others who can be helped actually were. Oh well. They just do not seem to be able to deal with God's will on this and are fighting it at every turn. So sad.

15. This is a story because GRUESOME ENTERTAINMENT is more profitable than
sober discourse. And because sober discourse, which our country and our world so desperately need, would quickly expose Bush's puppetmasters for what they are.

18. sober discourse
A woman with severe disabilities has been given a death by starvation order.

I consider this very sober.

22. This story, however, has very little to do with peoples' lives. The
unfortunate woman will die, maybe soon, maybe later, but the real story is how the RW has jumped on the maudlin tug-of-war of the parties involved to say that the US Senate is somehow supposed to be involved in this case. The reason it's leading in the MSM is because the masses of people are watching it as they would a soap opera. This choice of hysterical programming is unconscionable, and it's entertainment masquerading as news.

21. I woke up to one of those talk show 'fake commercials'
about Teri and Mike where he talked about it being the best weight loss program ever. All you need are shackles and handcuffs and you control the food. I turned off the radio right after the statement 'and this will make you money because when she dies you can collect hundreds of thousands of dollars in life insurance.'

I usually change the channel before I go to be, being a coast to coast listener for my evening entertainment, because far too often I awaken to Rush or one of these other neoconjob people spilling out their rhetoric of misinformation.

Speaking as an ex insurance agent who specialized in long term care I can say these simple facts.

1 - Her insurance stopped paying 13 years ago when the doctors declared her brain dead and said that there was no chance of recovery.

2 - Her insurance company likely would have dropped her anyway as they do not cover 'long term care' situations.

3 - Full care assistance at a nursing home costs between 3 and 6 thousand dollars a month, even more with special care like feeding tubes. 13 years adds up to close to 1 million dollars in medical bills. (10 years = 720,000 in full nursing for the national average)

4 - Medically her Cortex is dead and has decayed to becomming more cerebral spinal fluid rather than an active and living cortex, this is much like some of the very ld 486 and prior computers that were made without a CPU check routine where if you removed the CPU you could still boot to the BIOS section of the computer and it was able to maintain it's temperature and maintain the functions to keep the computer from being damaged by sitting idle but that was it. When you have no central cortex you are much like that computer, your basic functions might still operate, but the computer known as your brain isn't going to work anymore.

5 - To me this is the most important part, he has been offered buttloads of money to give her over to her parents including offers to recompense him all medical and other bills along with 1 million dollars in the latest most public offer. He refused, suggesting that he is doing what he believes is correct. Those who are making other claims are making claims inconsistant with the facts, but hey, who said the facts ever got in the way of emotions.
