Source: Schiavo's Feeding Tube Is Removed

1 minute ago Top Stories - AP

By MITCH STACY, Associated Press Writer

PINELLAS PARK, Fla. - Doctors removed Terri Schiavo's feeding tube Friday despite an extraordinary, last-minute push by Republicans on Capitol Hill to use the subpoena powers of Congress to keep the severely brain-damaged woman alive, a source close to the case told The Associated Press.

But Freepers don't care about that I guess.

6. I thought so too but
I've been advised that she cannot be a donor as death by starvation wrecks kidneys, livers, hearts, etc. It is too bad. She should be able to give life - to promote the 'culture of life' - by giving others the organs they need to survive, but it seems that we cannot allow that to happen.

30. yup
Symptoms of Dehydration

If all food and fluids (nutrition and hydration) are removed from a person -- whether that person is a healthy Olympic athlete who takes food and fluids by mouth or a frail, disabled person who receives them by a feeding tube -- death is inevitable. That death will occur because of dehydration.

As a person dies from lack of food and fluids, his or her

* Mouth would dry out and become caked or coated with thick material.
* Lips would become parched and cracked.
* Tongue would swell, and might crack.
* Eyes would recede back into their orbits.
* Cheeks would become hollow.
* Lining of the nose might crack and cause the nose to bleed.
* Skin would hang loose on the body and become dry and scaly.
* Urine would become highly concentrated, leading to burning of the bladder.
* Lining of the stomach would dry out and he or she would experience dry heaves and vomiting.
* Body temperature would become very high.
* Brain cells would dry out, causing convulsions.
* Respiratory tract would dry out, and the thick secretions that would result could plug the lungs and cause death.

At some point within five days to three weeks, the person's major organs, including the lungs, heart, and brain, would give out and death would occur.

11. She's Can't Be A Donor; She's Been on TPN Too Long
This isn't about using her as a vending machine for spare body parts; it's about not forcing a body to stay alive beyond all reason. Even if people on long-term TPN were suitable donors, that should have no bearing on these decisions.

Not that that matters. It's not about whether or not she'd make good spare parts; it's about ending this ghastly spectacle.

13. Not Sure There's Much To Donate
But I appreciate what you're saying.

I hope this doesn't turn out to become a wingnut moan and groan marathon until Terri passes. This could take a upwards of two weeks and become almost a modern day Waco for these wackos.

The fact the courts have stood up and allowed her legal guardian to have the ultimate say in this matter is good enough for me. Now let her torment end, let Michael Schaivo's nightmare end and the fundie/wingnuts on to their next victim.

23. I'm not sure what you mean, exactly
Would you like to explain what you mean? I am asking seriously.

I don't believe that Jesus "wants" any of this. I believe that Jesus had a lot of things to say but nothing about whether to take someone off of life support.

So, I'm curious as to what you meant.

29. Jesus does not want any of us to suffer
I agree with that statement. It's true that Jesus does not want her family to suffer, either.

As I said in a previous post, we pray for what we WANT. When God answers, He gives us what we NEED.

Jesus did not WANT to die on the cross but he NEEDED to in order to save mankind and wash away our sins.

"Not my will but thine."

It's sad that some Christians seem perfectly content to usurp God's will.

22. May Her Life
Edited on Fri Mar-18-05 04:23 PM by AutumnMist
be remembered for what it was. And not what political sides made of it. May she not suffer. And may those who loved her most, not the ones who use her as a pawn, on either side, know that she will be free. At least free from this stupid bullshit of an argument that we all know what's best for her. She was a daughter, sister, wife, and a beloved member of many families. Lets just let her die with some love and peace. Not the negative words of the press or what they have conjured up across the nation. She is a PERSON! Don't knock it. Regardless of how and when you think death should happen. She will begin the path of ending her life now. Lets have some respect for that.

32. I hope
she gets the peace she deserves soon. The poor woman will be remembered for this, and not who she was.

For as much as those freepers say that they can't wait to go to their reward, why are they fighting to keep this woman from going to hers?

This makes me wonder a couple of things. Wouldn't telling her husband she didn't want all sorts of artificial life supports constitute a verbal contract that would have to be honored? Also how iron-clad are those living wills?
