Another way to help ANDY.......
Edited on Fri Mar-18-05 07:52 PM by greatauntoftriplets
KelvinMace of Plan Nine Publishing has generously volunteered to donate some of the proceeds of sales of selected book that his company publishes to Andy Stephenson to see him through his surgery (scheduled for later this month as of today) and recovery.

Each book you buy from the link below (note the "Help Andy" in red in the upper left-hand corner means a couple bucks will go to Andy. For more details, please PM KelvinMace.

And a :toast: to David for his excellent offer.

Thanks all!

2. GAoT none of those books "call" me, do we still have a DU fund
going I can contribute directly to andy?

I think my $20 would be better spent going straight to Andy

5. GAoT, would you please confirm
that this is the PO box that I can use to send Andy some gardening books?

PO Box 25624
Seattle, WA 98165-1124

He and I discussed it in a DU thread a week or two ago and he seemed pleased by the idea, but he did not respond to a PM I sent him when a book he asked for arrived.

I just want to make sure that a box with 3 or 4 largish books in it will get to him if sent to this address. That PM I sent him also gave info on three of the other gardening books in the box - I can give that to you if he's not available and if you don't mind. He loves gardening so much, I thought this would cheer him.

11. He saw the doctor today and the surgery is scheduled.
I'll let him tell the date, but it's later this month.

He felt pretty good after seeing the doctor, who was very reassuring.

12. Thanks. That's what I needed to know. Here's the info that was in the PM
I'll go ahead and mail the book box. With media mail, I imagine it would take something like a week if I can get it out tomorrow (Sat) morning.

Since he may not have gotten the PM, here's the message text about the books so he can read it directly - it's hardly private:

(text of PM sent to Andy March 14 -- more recent than I remembered!)

The Better Homes and Gardens New Garden Book you mentioned arrived from Amazon.com today.

In the meantime, I took advantage of the twice-yearly half-price sale at my favorite local used book store and added three more promising-looking gardening books for the not very grand total of just 7 bucks. They are:

The Healthy Garden Handbook: an Illustrated Guide to Combating Insects, Garden Pests, and Plant Diseases," by the editors of Mother Earth News

From Seed to Bloom: How to Grow Over 500 Annuals, Perennials & Herbs, by Eileen Powell

Garden Way's Joy of Gardening, by Dick Raymond

These are all large-format soft-cover books like the Better Homes and Gardens one you asked for. They are older, but I feel sure they still have some good advice and I know they have nifty, cheerful pictures bursting with color and life.

(I'll skip the part where I was asking for confirmation that I could mail the box to that PO address)

The business of the leather book cover and what is to go into it is a separate matter we'll discuss later. For now, I want to get this box of Spring to you.

22. Hello Andy! Good thing I checked back on this thread one more time!
Edited on Sun Mar-20-05 08:15 PM by Nothing Without Hope
Glad to hear from you. I didn't get the books out Saturday morning, but they're going out for sure tomorrow. We'll still need to work out what goes into the leather cover, that'll come later. I hope the PM utility will be working this time!

Tulips up here in the Boston area are coming out from under the melting snow and the sprouts are about 3 inches tall. Crocuses will bloom before the tulips do, often coming up right through the snow. Forsythias will be next, then the tulips and daffodils.

Spring comes later here, but it unfolds over MONTHS! It gradually works its way up to my own favorite, the lilacs, which in this area are amazingly varied in color, shape and scent. I try to make it to the annual Lilac Sunday event at Boston' Arnold Arboretum; they have a most amazing collection of lilacs from all over the world there. The Arboreturm has between 15 and 20 different lilac species, with 350 varieties. http://www.arboretum.harvard.edu/plants/lilac_sunday.html

19. I wanted to do what I could
and being shy of money and thinking some folks might help if the where getting something they could use or give as a gift, I am donating my profits from any of these books that are sold.

By all means, if you wish to donate you Andy direct, please do so. But if you know someone who doesn't know Andy but might be in the market for something funny, send them my way and help Andy at the same time.

David
