Damn, I didn't want my wife going through that shit. Please do the same if that is your intention.

1. It would be nice if we had some sort of....
Confidential national registry provided for a minimal cost. It would make so many peoples lives easier.

3. I'll give you a form if you need it. All you need is to have it
notarized.

2. Make sure your doctor has a copy and that you have a copy on hand.
Not all emergencies happen during banking hours. BTW - you rock - that is an awesome thing to do. I also hope you signed a financial power of attorney while you were at it.

4. Good for you. Hubby and I signed ours a few years ago
I am lucky, my sister and mom know how I feel and they agree so if anything ever happens to me, there won't be a fight. I have no clue if hubby's family would accept his wishes. I hope I never have to deal with it, but if I did, I would fight as hard as Michael Schiavo has.

5. I would make out a living will anyway
It will keep the Jeb Bushs of the world from making a grandstanding play to further their political career.

6. AND check old ones too!
We have had them in our family for years. Last year when we first heard about all this Schiavo situation, we re-read them; ended up asking our attorney if the ones we had covered the feeding tube type issue - and it didn't! We did lots of research on what was and was not covered and then got new ones written and signed. Older ones didn't always consider the things we are facing now.

8. Good. But remember, even on DU there are people who feel you don't
have the right to make your choices about these things.

And even a living will can be challenged.

9. In my state (NC), the Living Will needs 2 witnesses and a notary.
It addresses "last stages of a terminal and incurable disease" and "persistent vegetative state" and you can choose "no artifical nutrition or hydration" in those circumstances.

I'm an attorney and charge $35 to get it all prepared and to have the witnesses and notary there, so all you have to do is come in and sign.

In certain cases, I've waived the fee or reduced it as well.

Check with local attorneys in your town if you don't want to do a form off the internet, you might find it is very affordable to get one in place with an attorney's office.
