Poll question: Are 274 Schiavo threads too many?
I've been hiding TS threads since last night. Started out as a means to simply clear my GD page, but it became a kind of experiment as more and more and more came along.

Now it's 274 since midnight last night. It'll be more after I post this.

Oddly enough, some on this forum are getting angry at those who think 274 threads are too much. They think somehow that their voices and their concerns are being stifled, when in fact they have 274 separate places to share their thoughts.

So...

49. Why is it vanity?
Is it because some of us care so much about a woman's right to die? Is it because we care about the abuse of separation of powers, state rights and congress being where it has no business being?

People here spout their anger about a wrong all the time and because so many of us are outraged and expressing it, you call it vain???

Is it vain to complain about how many times you(Will Pitt)has to work so hard at hiding threads?

It's simple really...ignore what you don't care about. Start threads you do care about or kick up threads you care about.

No one is preventing you or anyone else from not starting a thread. I think the ones who wish to control and squash conversation are the vain ones.

19. Both are pretty damned tiresome.
Edited on Mon Mar-21-05 12:59 AM by mcscajun
It's not the discussion, it's the lack of focus.

Find a thread. One that's out there. You'll get to say your piece.

But no, everybody feels they have to start their own. Nobody's reading the ones that are out there, 'cause the same references and questions keep coming up over and over and over and...

Yes. It's important. Critically so. Yes, it's sad. Pitifully so.

But. It's not the only thing happening out there.

And I don't think anyone's trying to 'control the discussion' or 'whining'. We're just venting here.

56. That's really the key complaint.
It isn't the vast number of threads, but the lack of organized and focused discussion having so many threads causes.

It's chaos and that's why we see the same arguments being posted over and over again.

It's like spinning wheels.

17. Not enough perhaps
There is a lot to say on this whole subject, and new thoughts and ideas come to light often (especially when drinking I might add). I see it less as 'threads' and more as questions one might throw out amongst a group of friends, or perhaps comments.

I am somewhat surprised really that there are not more. You think about something, pose a question or comment, and examine feedback - a natural thing to do - especially in a case like this that last for days or weeks.

It is a hot topic, much like the primaries were - each day brought something new or re-ignited something old. If we could say all there was about something in a few threads it would get dull here real quick. So for me, 274 is just an indication that we are alive and well and thinking, reflecting, wondering.

31. I think the point was
That it stirs emotions across a broad based group of people who feel outrage. One does not have to feel less or more because one item is larger then the other in the scheme of things, outrage is just outrage.

Whichever side of the fence one falls on in this issue, it elicits emotions - for one side it is a life and death struggle, for another it is a rights issue, throw in the constitution (both state and federal) and the courts, lots of media coverage, and one can see that BOTH issues would indeed make for a large thread count.

On the Rosa Parks thing too - I am sure there were some who would argue that it was not an issue for the feds and that it should be handled at a lower level, it was just a bus seat afterall they may say - this is about killing someone (or letting them die).

At any rate, both issues touch a nerve - that does not lessen one because the other.

If the majority of posters didn't think this was important, they wouldn't create the threads and they wouldn't respond to the existing threads. The threads would just die. Why this bothers you is just beyond my ability to comprehend. Sorry, I don't get the point of your frustration or your outrage!

If it weren't for your attempts to censor GD, I would never have looked at the issues involved, so you have but yourself to blame for my posts and I thank you for encouraging me to learn about Ms. Schiavo and the issues involved. Thanks :hi:

Advocacy or compassion for her would conflict with something far more important to them- defeat for anyone who dares to frame an issue using Judeo-Christian standards.

57. It's all getting a little much
The Toronto Star had a huge picture of Schiavo on the cover today. This brought up a disucission between some friends and myself. It was concluded that a) she is being absolutely used by multiple people. ie right wing fundies, crazy right-to-lifers, and the media who just LOVE sensationalism. and b) This is a complete distraction because there are a million other horrible things happening and this is such an easy issue to divert to.

I think it's despicable. Let her die peacefully and let that be the end of it. Not that it really matters to her at this point...she is so brain-dead that she probably doesn't even know she is alive.

63. I don't know...92% in a CNN poll say "too politicized"...
Turd Blossom may have jumped the shark on this one...

But, yeah, it did provide a few days of total distraction...

64. Quality versus quantity.
I'd be more interested in 275 threads that discussed the constitutional issues involved, and perhaps outlined a strategy of ten meaningful things DUers could take part in to address those threats to a democratic government that appear to be part of the national hysteria. I suppose I'd be happy with 27.5 threads. I'd even settle for 2.75 such threads.

Since you seem to be the self-appointed arbiter of good taste on this subject.

Just wondering.

76. Schiavo threads are like the Hydra
Edited on Mon Mar-21-05 12:04 PM by DancingBear
If you cut off a thread then two shall take its place.

That said, I believe that if the formula TS=5y((x+8)(2x)), where x=10 and y=20 is attained then we need to take a stand... :)

78. Not if the issue is unresolved....
Talk about it 'til the cows come home. No reason to shut off debate, just to talk about protests, war, debt, and joblessness.

83. Two Schiavo threads are too many, let alone 275.
One at a time is enough IMHO.
