B.T.W. I don't even live in a city.

But for longer journeys, various: to get into London I always use the train (driving in London is hellish and parking is worse), other journeys car, sometimes bus.

14. OK, I live 5 miles from work, the nearest bus station is 3 miles
The route the bus takes before going past my work is up to 6 miles.
What would you suggest?
I drive 3 miles to sit on the bus for 6 miles?

Then there are the people that live where there is no public transportation at all.

Had this discussion with someone the other day, the comment came up that people need to live near their work similar to the old mill days when the laborers lived in the neighborhood adjacent to the factory. I replied that would be great but I would not be able to sell my home in the burb because no one would want to live that far from any employment.
Public Transportation is not always the best option.

16. are you saying you drive 3 miles a day?
Edited on Mon Mar-21-05 07:10 AM by imenja
If so, indicate which car you have. I work at home a lot and use no vehicle many days. I still selected my type of car.

If you are asking me what I think about how you should get to work . . . I'm not about to tell anyone how they should get around.
This isn't a moral interrogation. It's just a poll.

17. I drive 10 miles a day min, 5 miles each way
It just wouldn't make sense to drive 3 miles and then get on the bus.

I drive a mid size sedan, it is the family car, We drive cross country to see family several times a year and I can't be confined in a compact with 4 people for 15 hours. And I can't afford more than two cars. My wife drives an economy car though.

42. 10 year old Escort wagon.
It sits in the driveway most of the time, because I work at home. I put $10 in the tank a couple of times a month.

It's in great shape, not a ding or rust spot on it, and gets pretty darn good mileage (upper 20s).

And, it's long paid for (the best part).

101. you don't know the difference in engine sizes??
well, the quick and dirty version: less cylinders = better gas mileage. suv's are big and heavy and take a bigger engine = more gas, less efficiency. it's not fair to lump suv's and vans together. you should have just made a separate category for each one.

41. Two kids, grandparents, and a big dog....
...plus a hobby that requires a trailer (since we have the kids and the dog packed into the main vehicle!) made us decide on a Durango for trips where we need the extra passenger room or the trailer.

For errands in town, we usually walk. For commuting or trips we use the husband's car, a Saturn Sedan.

He wants a hybrid, but we can't afford it right now and with both vehicles paid off, its hard to decide to take on more debt!

191. Prius mileage
You're right - the mileage improves in warm weather. Here are a few other things that can affect your MPG:

1) Tire pressure - run them at 42psi front, 40psi rear. This is 7-9 psi more than Toyota recommends, but is within the OEM tire specs. Some people report a slightly harsher ride, but you get a 1-2 MPG boost and better tire life.

2) You only start getting close to the rated MPG's when the Prius's ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) is hot. Therefore, your 1st 1-3 miles will be your worst mileage. If your neighbor has a really short commute, he might be only seeing MPG's in the mid 30's.

3) Learning to drive for the best MPG. This involves using the 'feathering' technique on the accelerator, getting briskly up to speed from a stop (as opposed to creeping up in speed to try and keep the instantaneous MPG reading as high as possible), and anticipating upcoming stop signs/lights in order to coast as much as possible.

4) ONLY use 5W-30 oil, change the oil every 5000 miles or 6 months, and make sure that the oil is NEVER overfilled (this can cause engine damage to the Prius, as well as decrease MPG's).

5) Read Prius on-line forums (such as www.priuschat.com) for lots of good tips and information.

Greyskye -

technology as far as diesels go. I go 10,000 miles between oil changes, too. I'm hoping the biodiesel route will work out, so it'll be a truly clean and renewable transportation. I ought to search these boards for people with experience in biodiesel.

61. What a pretty little car that is.
We're without right now-

Our son's 1996 GEO Metro (40+ mpg) was 'dollaring and diming' us to death. Always seemed to be just one more thing that needed fixed - especially after it was stolen and left for dead along the road. Should have called it a goner then, but coaxed a few more months of he'd 'drive it out, and we'd tow it home' out of it before finally sending it to the junkyard.

So we were down to one - My car. 2000 Dodge Neon. Totalled by an uninsured driver last fall - and our own coverage was just basic due to affordability issues with a 17 yr old in our household. We haven't been able to recover anything for our loss - apparently the saying 'can't get blood from a turnip' applies here, so we're currently without a vehicle other than my husband's work van - aka monstrous gas guzzler.

We've recently started looking again, and I've just added the VW Golf for consideration.

Thanks for your post.

Edited on Mon Mar-21-05 11:33 AM by in_cog_ni_to
Toyota Prius (maybe). We bought the Jag pre-owned certified and it was 3 years old at the time. As soon as we can get rid of the Jag, a Hybrid is my car. The Jag gets pretty good gas milage for a big car. It's MUCH better than my Toyota 4 Runner was. That thing sucked the gas like nothing I had ever seen. I really need a Hybrid. I feel guilty driving a bigger car when I could be driving a Hybrid. My concern with the Hybrid is having to replace the batteries...in would cost $2000 if that ever happened.

Hubby has a Chrysler 300M.

I may go with a small Diesel engine car. When I'm ready to buy, I'll decide. An ecomomical car WILL BE my next vehicle.

56. 1999 Suzuki Swift
Purchased new just as the 2000 model were released. Suzi is the parent of the Geo Metro line marketed by Chevrolet. Suzi doesn't offer the 3 cylinder engine, only the 1.3L 4 cyl. Mine's a 5 spd. Got 90k miles so far and I can drive from Portland to No. Calif before filling the 10 gallon tank. Several long uphills thru the mountains require a downshift to 4th but never below the 65 mph limit (often at 80+ to stay with interstate traffic). I couldn't be happier with this car. I'm 64 yrs and have owned many vehicles (including motorcycles and PU's). Last fill-up was 7.8 gals and trip-meter was 310 miles. Bring on the higher prices.
I can always ride my bicycle.

I saw one in the parking lot at Lowe's yesterday, and saw a young man jumping down out of the cab area to exit the behemouth.

I literally laughed in his face.

What a telling personal advertisment a Hummer is: I'm selfish, I suffer from a case of "teeny peeney syndrome", I'm absorbed with what others think of me, and I'm not too bright -- after all, I'm driving a Chevey Tahoe dressed up like a miltary vehicle.

Oh yeah, I wanna date him. :eyes:

I drive a 1985 Honda Elits 150 -- in which I put a gallon and a half of gas a week. I want the car I purchase to be a diesel so I can go biodiesel.

160. According to....
The various manufacturers and rental companies, a subcompact is a vehicle that can seaet 2 adults and two children, and carry 3 standard suitcases. Examples are a Hyundai Accent (what I drive), a Chevy/Geo Metro, a Mini (though, due to engine size, it is actually a sports car), VW Golf/Rabbit, Honda Civic, etc. Basically, if it is a little hatchback, it's probably a subcompact.

A Compact car carries four adults and 5 pieces of standard sized luggage. Ford Focus, Dodge Neon, Toyota Corrola, Hyundai Elantra, etc. are Compact cars.

It has a lot to do with backseat size.

BTW-did anyone notice that only 3% of DUers own a Hummer, and only 11% own an SUV??? If most of the Hummers and SUV's are owned by Repukes, then it's kind of poetic justice that the gas prices are going through the roof (that is, as long as they PAY their own gas bills!)

73. I bike and bus. I never drive anywhere, except on vacation.
wich we take every other year, and then I rent a minivan.

But everyday, regardless of the weather, I bike to the bus stop, take the bus as close as I can get to work, and bike the rest of the way. It adds about an hour to my commute, but I pay zero for gas, zero for maintenance (ok, maybe about 30 bucks a year to keep up my bike) and zero for insurance.

In addition to my work, I'm a full time student, and my college offers a free bus pass every year. My wife is a student as well, and gets the same deal.

The only time we have a problem is when we shop for groceries. Its hard to get a few weeks worth of food on a bike, and the grocery store is not on the bus line. So I took an old red wagon that was left over from one of my kids, and rigged it to the back of my bike. I used some milk crates to add an extra level, bungee chords to keep it intact, and a piece of tarp for weather protection.

I've been at this for 4 years, and the clerks know me. They never bag my stuff up, because they know I have to repack everything. I live in a small town, and though not many people know my name, they do know me as "the bike guy."

For the little bit of effort I extend, I save hundreds of dollars a year on our budget, and help out the planet. My kids think Im a dork, but they love to go on bike rides, and they give their mom a hard time when she wants to take the bus. They are car free for the moment, but I'm sure that as they grow older, their teenage brains will kick in and demand a vehicle. That's ok. They have a good foundation.

Some times it takes a little thread like this to encourage us to make a list of the really nice things in life.

Thanks!

Where I live, I can bike to places, but my nieghborhood is so congested, I have not found a way to comfortably maneuver myself, a bicycle and all of my groceries. I can use a bus and the wheeled shopping cart, but I can get some evil stares from people who hate the 15 seconds it takes me to drag myself and my cart onto the bus. Still... I am not giving up hope that one can shop without a car. :)

Rare manual transmission.

Why?
-Everyone else around here has SAAB convertibles.
-MUCH faster than you'd expect such a heavy car to be.
-Enjoys, nay demands a bit of a spanking once a week or so to keep the ECC properly set.
-Unlike a Boxster, has a back seat.
-Unlike a BMW convertible, people don't mutter "yuppie bastard" when they see you driving one.

(Mrs R has a Volvo S60 2.4T AWD with the sports package. Maybe the ultimate family sedan. Reasonably fast, corners like it's on rails, the "shift it yourself" automatic actually works pretty well, legendary Volvo seats, legendary Volvo safety, AWD systems makes it seem like there's no snow, even with all-weather tires.)

Sorry for going onn like this, but I'm a car guy. What can I say.

195. I lost a leg
1n an auto accident in 1986 driving a Chevy. The car just crumpled up. Had Hummers existed at the time, and had I been driving one, I probably would have 2 legs today. I don't drive a Hummer today because I live in SF and the parking would be a nightmare. However, I did seriously consider it when I read that in a head-on the hummer will provide more protection than any other passenger vehicle. (I lost my left leg so I can still drive without any special apparatus.)

I DO drive a BMW, because it will not crumple up like tin in an accident as will most American and Japanese cars. (Yes, I know Volvo's are also pretty tough, I have driven them for many years, but BMW' 5 or 7s are still better.) Yes, I know Hummers (and SUV's generally) are not very safe driving vehicles because of tendencies to tip over at unsafe speeds, etc. But I lost my leg because of the other fucker, not me. I trust MY driving ability. I no longer can trust anyone else's. So I say bring on the Hummers if they can provide superior protection in an accident. And the more armor the better.

Sorry for going on at such length, but I feel strongly on the subject. I can feel phantom pains even as I type this.

It gets about 30 mpg, less if we're driving in town. We don't use it much, LD works near home and I work at home.

We were carless for several years but bought it last year because taking a toddler and a weeks worth of gorceries on the bus was a bit of a nightmare. More than likely we'll keep it until I get knocked up again, then get a minivan or a Volvo wagon.

And a very pretty one. SUV drivers are very defensive. We all know that all SUV's are not identical in gas mileage. Nor are all compacts. Newer cars undoubtedly get much better mileage than my beat up 92 Ford Escort. Next time I do a poll like this, I'm not going to provide an other option. The only poster who seemed to clearly fit other was the one who said he rode a flying saucer. Go figure.

Sorry I didn't adequately answer your poll question. ;) And that you think I'm defensive. :D

My car is a CR-V w/ a different shell. I guess I never thought of a CR-V as an "suv" (although the newer models seem to be creeping up in size and bulk), but I'm the first to admit I could be wrong.

For the record, up until a couple of months ago I was rolling in an '89 Aerostar minivan.

My VW Passat Wagon is fabulous! It has every bell and whistle, plenty of room for me, two dogs and the stuff I schlepp back and forth to work, and handles better than any car I've ever had, including my 300ZX.

Best of all, I get 40 mpg on the highway and at least 30 mpg in town.

Instead of increasing my mileage by 10% or whatever all the little tips will achieve, I managed to DOUBLE my mileage over my previous ride, a minivan.

My very luxurius, damn-near perfect Passat wagon cost less than than my last minivan, about $27,000 with every accoutrement except leather seats. (Instead, I got "leather-like")

:)

145. 1989 Toyota Celica Convertable...
Don't know whether to vote compact or sport, but, let me put it this way, the tank holds about 12 gallons, topped off, which I did today, from empty. I drove 200 miles, mostly highways, today, that is rare, had to make a trip for a friend, and right now the gas gauge is sitting at 3/4 right now. Not bad for a 16 year old car, if I do say so myself. One thing I will say though that is somewhat bad, the car REQUIRES premium gas, otherwise its fuel system degrades, especially the fuel injection, etc. So I spent 23 dollars filling the car up today, but it runs really good. Just had an oil change last week, keep up with those and it will probably last until the next century, if we had the gas to fill it up with. Right now I have a new job, and I'm going to see what the practicality of converting the car to total electric would be, with options for solar or plug in power. I'm not giving up the car for anything, but I will make it as self sufficient as possible, if its possible, need to talk to my mechanic uncle about that.

I check a web page for gas mileage, and it's just about the worst. It's all paid off, has been very reliable and requires little maintenance. As good as this car has been, when I can afford a new one, it will be something smaller (but still with 4WD for those New England winters).

153. I have a 1997 Pacific Green (my first NW car color!) Mercury Sable...
Edited on Tue Mar-22-05 03:54 AM by Radio_Lady
Just hit 70,000 miles and almost avoided a $400.00 brake job, but had to have it for safety. The car is paid off.

My husband traded a 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse for a new 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse -- it now 30,000 miles, all paid off, and runs well. I just don't like to drive it because it has "cockpit seating" -- but I feel like I'm sitting on my coccyx bone with my legs stretched out in front.

Our mileage is low because we are both retired. But I have no idea about the mileage ratings. All I know is that gas has gone through $2.17 at some stations in just a couple of weeks. Un-freakin'-believable!

We take the Mercury downtown a couple of times a week for "happy hour" dinners and movie previews. I drive the stick-shift Mitsu when I want to zoom around and feel younger! But watch out for those policemen -- they're looking for racy little sports cars, I know it!

We love the Portland, OR MAX Trains and often leave our car in our home town parking lot and travel on these sleek "toy trains" (they just have a few cars, compared to the MBTA in Boston which had much bigger, noisier, and longer subways. Just took a trip last weekend on the new Portland trolleys that link up the waterfront to other parts of the city. Smooth design, free fare zones in the city, and the grandchildren love them!

Now, I know what some might say...GAS GUZZLER...

Well, it gets better milage than the v6 did, and is a good tow vehicle.

It will be good for plowing our driveway this winter after we move.

The Buick has 162k+ miles and the Towncar has 142k+ miles. Hubby drives 10 miles a day (to/from work) and I drive the other car (Buick) maybe 1-2x a week, if even that. We don't go on long trips.

I shouldn't even have to justify it, but I will. I got it in Hawaii, where I had to drive on 4x4 roads only. There are roads there, like down to Waipio Valley and going down to the beach in other areas where you MUST have 4 wheel drive, also we have a ranch where you must have 4 x 4 to get there. I also have 4 dogs.

And I love my Tahoe. I try not to drive if possible, but I do love my Tahoe. I grew up driving those big, full-size Jeep Cherokees (before they stopped making them). So for me it's not a fashion statement, just a realistic vehicle for my needs.

198. 2000 Kia Sephia with a cracked windshield and busted bumper
I promised I'd drive it until the wheels fell off. Well, the wheel covers are falling off :-D but it's a darn good little car. Good gas mileage, solid little commuter. I'd buy another Kia for sure - the price point is great.

Of course I would prefer to take public transportation, but to be honest, I can't figure it out. I loved taking the public transit in Germany - it was ridiculously easy and efficient. The bus system in Seattle just leaves me scratching my head. I can never figure out how to get where I want to go from a bus stop, rarely with a handful of maps, sometimes with the website. It's just too confusing.

205. sports car and mid size combo
In freeperlandia they said I was an idiot for lumping these two together. My rationale was that the gas mileage is about the same, and the vehicles are close in body size.

Ann Coulter and Condi. You haven't let us know who the other two are? Let's see: Karen Hughes, Kay Bailey Hutchinson, Michael Malkin, Laura Ingham, Olympia Snowe (she's probably too reasonable for you), Bay Buchanan, fill in the blanks.

And I have to have a car. I live in a rural area and it's just not possible to use a bike or my legs to pick up groceries, etc.

223. 92 Geo Prizm, bicycle, walking, and stay at home.
If I have to drive, then obviously the car.

My town is a small rural town, so the bike get the nod for around town if the weather permits.

Downtown (All one block of it.) is only four blocks away, so I often walk.

I work from home on the internet, so I don't have to commute. Usually just a daily walk to the post office.

On most good weather days the car doesn't get cranked at all.

Don't give me credit for being an environmentalist, I'm just a cheapskate and don't like spending money that I don't have to.
