did you know xians had a special odor that non-xians didn't have?

Church-state lesson learned
School admits it crossed line

A fifth-grader's family is suing the Cumberland County school system because her teacher used a Christian text that preached creationism and encouraged children to proselytize for Jesus.

The suit, filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Raleigh, says that a teacher at Sunnyside Elementary School in Fayetteville assigned students readings that included the lesson "Scents Make Sense."

"God's word tells us about a kind of odor only Christians have ...," the lesson read. "Christians carry forth the fragrance of Christ wherever they go by the way they live; that is, they remind people of Him.

"Could someone find Christ by the scent trail you are leaving behind you?"

19. Being a fundamentalist means you have no comprehension of "metaphor"
By definition, you take the bible literally.

Any attempt to describe it as metaphor is blasphemy.

26. Then why do they have such trouble
distinguising "real Christians" from people just claiming to be Christians? We hear about people who appear to be Christians but when they're found to be living a life very contrary to a Christian life, we're told they aren't "real Christians." If Christians have a different odor than this shouldn't come up. Have people sniffed on the way into church. If people are faking it, then it'll be obvious and the churches can turn them away.

Kind of a rhetorical question . . .

As much as I would prefer to use wine, most of the conservative brances prefer the "non-alcoholic alternative," brought to you courtesy of Mr. Welch.

(True story: Welch's grape juice was developed so that the Southern Methodist churches could have communion without alcohol. Just another FYI, free of charge. :) )

I don't think fundies use wine for communion. They do baptisms but don't do most of the rituals that Catholics and Episcopalians do.

It's my guess this woman is a fundie, likely Baptist. There are a LOT of those in the South. They speak in tongues, do healings, snake handlings and other magical rituals.

Teaching religiophobia using our tax dollars. What a sham but I'm not suprised this happened in Fayetteville. Fayetteville is a low income, high crime area right outside of Ft. Bragg military base. Scary place. :scared:

72. You know
Fayetteville is my hometown. With all the shit that people have to put up with there, this really takes the cake. The schools are underfunded, thanks to an NC Supreme Court ruling that declared the state can inequitably disburse funds among the counties. The crime rate is 2d in the state (yay for Durham) and the city's economy is almost totally based on providing services for Ft. Bragg. I highly doubt that there was any misunderstanding on the law in this case. I've seen and heard of too many misdeeds by school administrators in the area to believe that a school would fail to ensure that a teacher, presumably certified, would be ignorant of the law.

25. Sorry, but...er... it is true...
We send up a "sweet savour" unto God, by living in Christ, with true belief and holy works. A way of life which believes the truth firmly and without equivocation, and lives righteously in this truth,. is pleasing to God. It leads those who are of the same mind to life, but to those who are opposed to Christ, it is a bitter smell.

"Whether, saith he, one be saved or be lost, the Gospel continues to have its proper virtue: and as the light, although it blindeth the weakly, is still light, though causing blindness; and as honey, though it be bitter to those who are diseased, is in its nature sweet; so also is the Gospel of sweet savor, even though some should be lost who believe it not." (St John Chrysostom)

listen friend, I understand that you have a monopoly on Truth. You are perfectly free to believe whatever you want. But you must know that the insufferable arrogance that you and your ilk wear on your sleeves is one of your least endearing aspects. Arrogance in the promotion of a body of literature which appears to me to be a mishmash of ancient mythology(older than the world is claimed to be!), politics, posturing, poetry, philosphy and raving is questionable, to say the least.

If you showed a bit of the humility of your savior you might get more of a hearing from us heathens.

I BELIEVE I'll go home and have a beer.

Personally, I think there is some (metaphorical) truth to the statement. People who truly admire Jesus will subconsciously emulate him, or at least their understanding of him, in small and subtle ways.

So, do any of the following remind you of Jesus?

68. Detection could be automated
If Christians have a unique smell, research could determine the chemicals involved, and detectors could be built. Church doors could be fitted with devices which would sound an alarm when someone who was not a true believer passed through. New presidents (and biology teachers) would have to pass the smell test. Airports could screen prospective travellers (because we all know that terrorists aren't Christian).
