Stars and Stripes letter: AFN needs diverse opinions (Air America)
AFN needs diverse opinions

Rush Limbaugh is not of interest to all. Equal time needs to go to more moderate interests, and, failing that, to progressive ones.

I hereby launch a campaign to hear Air America once, at prime time, for every time Rush is on the air. Please let your local American Forces Network radio station know that you need to hear more than a paid announcement from the party line.

Any other point of view is absolutely necessary. Rush’s sources and motivations are highly suspect, and it would be interesting to look on White House pay records for what amounts go to the “Excellence in Broadcasting Network.”

I would also be curious as to what influence leads this broadcast to be on AFN on prime time four to five days a week, with political balance only from my fellow Texan Jim Hightower, for five minutes, buried somewhere in the early morning.

If we don’t demand freedom of choice, we won’t get it.

1. Thank you Emily Dolan Gordon!
If the military doesn't speak out about the overdose of Oxyrush nothing will ever change.

2. I've been bitching to my local AFN since the Frankfurt station
was shipped my way. When they went from Frankfurt to Coleman, the format drastically changed and Rush could be heard all day, almost everyday. Dr. Laura was even added. It was moved from Frankfurt when the "pentagon channel" wanted it's own station building.

They play him on the TV channel guide station. As the movie listings go by, Rush can be heard. Mute doesn't change the lack of choice. Nor does turning the TV off change the principle.

Letters, calls, and even in person (to the local station). I've gotten others to complain as well. So far, nothing.

I've started writing the main AFN station in California.

They went so far immediately after the change-over to take the Daily Show off...that brought on a tremendous amount of bitching from outraged fans. 2 days later, we had the show back.

So I'll keep kvetching to them.

6. I have called Armed Forces Radio as well, to get rid of Rush
It's time to recommit to the effort or at least push for Air America.

4. One reason Air America wont fly with the military
is that they will give air time to people who suggest that, for example, soldiers intentionally shot at Giuliana Sgrena's vehicle. I mean, it's one thing to be against the war. Lots of military people are I'm sure. It's another thing entirely to go on the air and say, "yeah, those soldiers knew that Giuliana Sgrena was in that vehicle. They fired at her on purpose."

That's an insult to soldiers and I'm guessing even progressive democrat soldiers will get pretty mad if they hear it on armed forces radio.

You have to be sensitive to people, even when you disagree with them and even when you think they're wrong.

5. Don't be too sure about that. It wouldn't piss me off
and it wouldn't piss the lady writing the LTTE off. There are more like us.....more than people realise. Besides, they can do like they tell me to do...turn it off when Air America is on.

7. I thinkl the soldiers are OK with hearing different viewpoints.
Freedom: it's what they are fighting for over there in the Middle East. Freedom includes being able to listen to different viewpoints.

9. Your point has been made several times in Stripes letters
in just the past two weeks, by clear thinkers rebutting the idiots who want to get rid of Doonesbury yet fight in Iraq for "democracy."

10. I had no idea about Doonesbury.
I grew up in ultra-fundie conservative Chattanooga. Back in the early 1980s, the local RW paper, The Chattanooga New-Free Press (and believe me, it was free of news) refused to run Doonesbury on Sunday with the other comics. Instead, they ran it on Saturday. The reason: they were afraid that kids might read it. Like they couldn't read it on Saturday if so inclined. Of course, this same paper, to this day, calls communists "the reds." It's like they are in a 1950s time warp.

12. Yikes!
though there are plenty in the military who consider Doonsebury "left wing propaganda" LOL! What's Gary been writing about lately? Amputees, as I recall.

11. On the same page regarding paintball. funny in a sad way.
I was at Forward Operating Base Falcon for 11 months. It was hard enough to find time to sleep and do laundry, much less play paintball games. I found quite a unique way to hone the skills needed to perform the grunt tasks that my field artillery unit had been reorganized to accomplish. It was called patrolling, raids, being targeted by roadside bombs and car bombs, etc.
