Shiavo/Sun - is it money or race?
Here's a story that appeared in the New Haven Register a week or so ago. As far as I can tell, this kid has the same condition that Sun Hudson had - and he is still alive!

1. I say it's money.....
but then again, when you have a median household income in the 40Ks for Whites, Asians, and Hispanics, and in the Mid 30s for Blacks, doesn't money conveniently take care of the race issue?

3. This is easy to figure out....
<snip> "The part the Flanigans can’t get past logically is that the insurance will cover the higher cost — $30,000 per month to put Dillon in a long-term facility far from home."

If the insurance company can force the Flanigans to put their infant in a nursing home care environment and sign away their rights to all medical decisions and care, then on the insurance company's managed care schedule and not the families, they can withdraw filial <I think that's the term for hopeless to go on> care without the family giving consent. So it's all about money in Sun's case. The Schiavo case is about right wing politics.

4. I think it is both
the parents of terri must be willing to pay or they would have insisted she be taken off years ago. Also the baby has young parents with less disposable income. Probably no insurance so it was coming out of the hospital's pocket. What mother would skip pre natal care if she could afford it?

5. Terri is supported by Medicaid
She's considered indigent under Florida law, so Medicaid pays.

8. PreNatal Care
From what I read (sorry but I don't have the link), if his condition has been discovered prior to his birth, her only option would have been abortion.

7. He's not going to live much longer
I think the ethic's of what the parents are doing in the case in the link are questionable at best.

The only thing they are achieving is that he will probably know he is dying when he does die.
