-snips-
The street demonstration was largely successful, with demonstrators gathering in the street for over an hour before marching to the bandshell. Many people reported thumbs up or horns honking in favor of the message of "Bring the Troops Home" although some people did report receiving a few negative gestures from passersby. The event was covered by Fox News, Channel 2 (CBS) and Channel 5 (ABC) as well as the Tennessee Radio Network, WLAC (ClearChannel), and the Tennessean.
The Nashville Peace Coalition, principal organizer for the event, handed out flyers about the War in Iraq and why they were there that day. It said in part that,
"We mourn these losses of human life and destruction of the civilian infrastructure in Iraq. In light of the recent acknowledgement by White House that there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, as well as in light of the dubious legitimacy of the current Iraqi elections, the peace coalition calls on our government to end the occupation of Iraq, allow an international body to take over Iraqi reconstruction, and recompense the Iraqi people for the pain and suffering caused by the decisions of our elected leaders.
