Today's Democracy Now - Hotel Palestine: Killing the Witness
Wounded Spanish Journalist Olga Rodriguez Describes the U.S. Attack on the Palestine Hotel That Killed Two of Her Colleagues

On April 8th, 2003, the U.S. military opened fire on the Palestine Hotel in Baghdad, killing two journalists: Taras Protsyuk, a Reuters cameraman from Ukraine, and Jose Couso from the Spanish TV network, Telecinco. We speak with Spanish journalist Olga Rodriguez, who was wounded in the attack. She says, "I never imagined that American troops were going to attack journalists living in a place protected by international law."

Hotel Palestine: Killing the Witness - Documentary Exposes the Truth Behind the Attack

We air an excerpt of the documentary, "Hotel Palestine: Killing the Witness," produced by Jose Couso's network, Telecinco, and broadcast on Spanish TV. It includes interviews with numerous journalists who were inside the Palestine Hotel, the AP reporter embedded with US forces at the time of the attack as well as the US tank commander who pulled the trigger.

It's pretty interesting. It's one of those things where journalists are the only ones investigating the story (in this case of what happened and who is responsible for the tank that shot at the Hotel Palestine).

And the story of the shooting of the Hotel Palestine is that the US military is trying to get rid of journalists who investigate the US military.

Lots of good footage/interviews.

1. Why, why if US soldiers did it, orders would have to have been..
given to the whole Army.

/sarcasm

Isn't that what was said after the Italian journalist fiasco?

4. I saw that this morning - it WAS interesting
Apparently, within the space of a few hours, Al Jazeera was shut down, another Arab speaking news station was bombed, and the Palestine Hotel was blasted. And the documentary shows the Chimp reacting to it with the memorable words "War is a dangerous place".

5. I haven't seen the documentary
but I remember this very well. CNN had Christianne Amanpour on the air right after this happened and she was literally shaking with rage. There was absolutely no valid reason for a tank to pop off a round at this hotel. Everyone knew journalists were staying there.

6. I think the documentary is new
It's showing in Manhattan this evening. Lexington and 79th - if I remember correctly.

The portion "Democracy Now" shows includes interviews with the person who fired the tank and different people.

The family and colleagues of one of the killed Spanish journalists is taking the case to the EU Parliament soon.
