March 23, 1969 Rally for Decency
In direct response to one James Morrison's performance a couple days before, on this day in 1969, a crowd of 30, 000, including Jackie Gleason, Kate Smith, The Lettermen and Anita Bryant, turned out for the Rally For Decency in Miami. It was proclaimed that "longhairs and weird dressers" would not be allowed to attend the rally. Four days later, President Richard Nixon sent a letter of commendation to the organizers of the event.

2. It's been a while since I've seen it ...
... but I remember something about that in Oliver Stone's movie "The Doors." If I remember correctly, that was the start of legal problems that followed Jim Morrison until he died in Paris.

It reminds me a lot of what Lenny Bruce went through with all his "obscenity" trials.

4. it was the part of the performance
where jim took his cock out and started masturbating for the audience, on the theory (probably correct) that this is what most of the audience came to see, that established the world standard for out of control stage acts that Janet Jackson cannot hold a nipple to. Courtney Love may have come in a distant second.

I only know one person who claimed to have been there, and I haven't talked to him in like 30 years. But it is a great myth, true or false. Gotta love morrison.
