SYDNEY (Reuters) - A devoutly Christian Australian government minister who gave up for adoption a child he believed was his 27 years ago had used "Vatican roulette" as their only contraceptive method, the child's mother has said.
Health Minister Tony Abbott, a key adviser to conservative Australian Prime Minister John Howard, admitted being flabbergasted after a Christmas reunion with a 27-year-old man he thought was the son he had given up for adoption.
Abbott then said he was shocked and numb to learn last week that DNA tests had proved that the man was not his son after all.
But Abbott's former girlfriend attracted front-page headlines on Wednesday after saying she had a chance encounter with a friend and flatmate, named only as Bill, in the late 1970s.
