shay (r) conn. was kick ass on hardball just now
saying how his party should have stayed out, how not their place, how religious base is small what is this, and how interesting it will be if his party only plays to the base

he said people in house didnt want to vote but felt forced, they didnt like that they were asked to

he said how both his wife and daughter emailed him and told him what they wanted if anything happened to him and that they should stay out and this country went nation wide

he was right on on everything

1. why doesn't he bolt over from the dark side?
he is one of the few remaining "Rockefeller Republicans" left.

2. It sure seems like he's sick of his own party
He's extremely vulnerable in his district as it is, it would make sense for him to just become a Democrat.

14. His district is classic "Rockefeller Republican"
It's Fairfield County, which includes old-money towns like Greenwich and New Canaan. It's the original Bush breeding ground. He likely couldn't win election as a Democrat.

18. It also includes three of Conn.'s seven largest cities
Bridgeport, Stamford and Norwalk. Stamford city limits in particular do include a fair amount of Rockefeller R's, and the R-leaning suburban towns (Greenwich, Fairfield, etc.) are relatively populous, so a series of mostly anonymous Dem challengers have had trouble there -- but Shays would carry his name recognition and goodwill with him, much like Jeffords did in Vt.

In fact, like Jeffords, he could simply jettison the repukes and go independent, rather than switching to Dem. Remember, Conn. had an independent Governor in Lowell Weicker not that long ago. You remember -- the one who was NOT sentenced to prison??

K-A
grew up in the 4th when Stew McKinney was still the rep. A common sight along the Post Road were cars with both Carter/Mondale and McKinney stickers -- yes, the same car.

8. You have a point, it is important to have this discussion if they really
want to avoid doing this again. Will they?

12. He voted against it on Sunday.
I would take him as Senator over Lieberman at this point.

"My party is demonstrating that they are for states' rights unless they don't like what states are doing," said Representative Christopher Shays of Connecticut, one of five House Republicans who voted against the bill. "This couldn't be a more classic case of a state responsibility."

"This Republican Party of Lincoln has become a party of theocracy," Mr. Shays said. "There are going to be repercussions from this vote. There are a number of people who feel that the government is getting involved in their personal lives in a way that scares them."

C. Shays

5. Moderate Republicans (and ALL Republicans)
are now realizing the price they have to pay to have the support of the radical fundamentalist extremist religious Right. To Shays (and Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins, Chaffee, etc.) it's all starting to get rather icky........

10. Shays seems like such a very, very nice man.
I remember a speech of his on the floor when he said something about how the Republicans can one day look like the Democrats (all different colors, sexes).

Fat chance, but he said it so sincerely.

13. Bubble Burst--sorry, ...from the land of Snowe and Collins
It's called "I want to be re-elected" in an area that voted Dem and has had it with this shit. These assholes are not saints. These assholes are politicans---come on, you are smarter than that. They are playing to their base which means that a whole chunk of Dems have to vote for them or they are done. We will vote Snowe back in of course. Whole newpaper article about it just othe other day. She is a fixture. But, they are covering the bases, just in case. If the fucking morons who were able to see that at Dem president and Congress were leathal were able to get rid of these people we would be in control. But they like these sweethearts. They don't know that they stand up to Bush and the nutsos on some issues that make national headlines and they go along with them in slitting the throats of every day Americans on all the behind the scenes legislation that is eliminating the middle class. This guy is no different.

22. on both sides i am tired of this
we diss politicians when they are honest, certainly when they lie, when htey do right and when they do wrong. if a politician believes something but goes against others we attack. we the people have a part in what we create. i do not believ e we dont haev a part in this.

and yea to shay for speaking up and against the fundie part of his party.
