Why is William Donahue so ANGRY all the time?
He's the head of the Catholic League, and even long before the Terri Schiavo case, he's absolutely incapable of presenting an argument without yelling and screaming.

I just watched him today with Christopher Hitchens, and last night with Al Franken, both of whom were calm and collected, and all Donahue could do was scream, red-faced, at anybody who disagrees with him.

Is THIS supposed to the face of American catholics? It's not a pretty one. The guy's a mad-man.

1. He's so FULL of
Outrage.

Here's my favorite piece on Willy:

William A. Donohue, president of the conservative Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, has made 23 guest appearances on TV news programs in 2004. Donohue uses his appearances primarily to attack gays and progressives. He has referred to the "gay death style," remarked, "God forbid we'd run out of little gay kids," claimed that Senator John Kerry "never found an abortion he couldn't justify," and claimed that "Hollywood is controlled by secular Jews who hate Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular ... Hollywood likes anal sex."

Two reasons:
First, the current Pope kinda apologized for that Hitler thing.

Second, people keep misspelling his name.

9. Actually, I wasn't referring to you.
I've seen it spelled Donahue and Donohue and Donoughue and Donahoe.

I have no idea which, if any, is correct.

The ones with the crown of thorns simulations under their clothes.

11. I was wondering why he was yelling, too
Hitchens even told him he didn't have to shout, but the guy kept going. Gave me a headache. I had to mute the TV.

12. I don't believe Donahue has any official connection to the Church
He started the Catholic League with the intention that it serve as a kind of Catholic Anti-Defamation League. His state of perpetual outrage ensures (1) the continutiation of his self-appointed mission, and (2) the checks will keep rolling in.

What's an anti-defamation league unless you find defamation?

15. Look at Archie Bunker
Then look at William Donahue.

Then look at Archie Bunker.

Then look at William Donohue.

Then just shake your head.

Life does imitate art.

17. Would you be angry if YOU had the head the Catholic League?
Besides, the nuns probably beat the bastard nearly into a coma back in grade school.

19. A better question might be
Why is this man on television at all? I've seen him on several occasions and still have not begun to fathom why anyone would have him on except as a sop to all the idiots in the audience. He adds nothing to an argument and spews nothing but intolerance.

Think back to 15-20 years ago. Would Donohue have been invited on any respectable news show? No. Having 24 hour news has not become a godsend to the general public. It has, instead, reduced the level of discussion to people like him.

What a wasteland.

20. That's the second half of my question...
Is pure outrage enough to be a pundit nowadays? It's not like he ever actually makes a point or expresses a nuanced opinion. It's just pure outrage.

I don't get it...
