"Christian physicians" say Terri can swallow, is being MURDERED!

March 24, 2005—The Executive Director of the 17,000-member Christian Medical Association today said that because Terry Schiavo is able to take food and fluids by swallowing, withholding nutrition from her amounts to murder.

David Stevens, M.D., who holds a masters degree in ethics, explained, "In a murder mystery, the case often turns on a small piece of evidence initially overlooked. Experts viewing the videos of Terri Schiavo have focused on signs such as her recognizing her family. It is easy to actually overlook the most important evidence: Terri Schiavo is not drooling. She is able to swallow her own secretions. And that is a crucial distinction with immense ethical implications.

"Feeding tubes are put in patients for many reasons, but in patients like Terri, they are often put in solely for the sake of convenience. That's because giving fluids and food a spoonful at a time in a patient like Terri could take up to an hour or two, whereas a bag of liquid food and fluids can be hung and gets the job done automatically. To not offer Terri Schiavo food and water by mouth, when it is obvious that she can swallow, morally is murder.

"That means that prohibiting her family and nursing staff from trying to feed her, which Terri Schiavo's husband and the courts have prohibited, amounts to murder. Refusing to offer food and liquid to a patient who can eat or drink is passive euthanasia. Sustenance critical to the maintenance of life has been withheld.

1. I hope every
fucknut protesting this makes a point of only going to faith-based doctors from now on. We could use a good die-off.

20. What I would do
if I was in Michael Schavio's case is I would get every doctor that has actually worked with Mrs. Schavio and can show how these so-called doctor's are lying and sue to have their licenses taken away. I would also go after every single person who has been calling me a murder. :grr: I feel so bad for Mr. Schavio. I wish the ACLU could help him with that.

9. I read somewhere that swallowing saliva is totally different from
swallowing food.It is more of a reflex action that doesn't require a conscious effort. I don't really remember where I saw this but it was in a medical article posted on DU yesterday. Anyone else read this?

25. Yes, swallowing saliva is a reflex and doesn't indicate consciousness.
Edited on Fri Mar-25-05 03:24 AM by moobu2
Look at it this way, when you're asleep or otherwise unconscious, your mouth still produces saliva. As the saliva collects and runs down the throat it triggers the reflexive swallowing mechanism and you swallow. If that auto reflex wasn't there, we would all choke to death the first time we went to sleep.

11. Has this twit even examined the patient?
Edited on Thu Mar-24-05 08:36 PM by Warpy
Has he seen a swallowing study?

If the answer to either question is "no," and if he's relying on the testimony of those crazy "nurses" that was so off the wall it's been thrown out of every court case so far, he needs to have his license pulled.

Anybody who makes a diagnosis without seeing the patient and based on tainted affidavits by third parties is a menace.

Hell, put a sandwich next to her bed if it makes y'all feel better.

Just don't expect her to reach for it.

12. Just who is the "executive director of the Christian Medical Association"?
Is he a board-certified neurologist familiar with all the details of Terri Schiavo's case?

And what is the Christian Medical Association? As the saying goes, opinions are like . . . Everyone has one.

Faith-based medicine and science--we're back in the Middle Ages somewhere with that, I think.

13. Let's Put Them To Their Word
Edited on Thu Mar-24-05 08:38 PM by KharmaTrain
Let's invite this "doctor" to bring Terri a glass of water. If she can't drink it...surely she must be tired from this ordeal and is so weak...he can help her drink it. By putting water in her mouth good chance it will go straight to her lungs and she would drown. Now who would be the killer?

15. this issue of the fanatic religious right has been noted for at least ten
years by those such as People for the American Way and
Americans United

It has been festering beneath the radar of most Americans who would be concerned.

Now we see, not only has in infiltrated into people advertising to sell their kittens to a Christian family, but has infiltrated into a profession where the trust of a sick person is compromised.

I have been keeping track. I have seen women on gaddam recipe forums for crying out loud, calling themselves Christian cooks for pete's sake.

But now, I think, it has gotten out of control and we are obliged, if we are sick to check out the religious bent of a doctor in order that we may be assured of the care we get is what we want for ourselves.

This is insanity and we, as consumers, deserve better than to let religion run our life and our health according to it's particular dogma. And the record of the dogma of these types of religious nuts, is immoral as it treats sickness and helplessness, and dependancy upon their so called "expertise"

16. Terri was killed years ago
The cause of her death will be her heart attack. These people are fighting so desperately for this, and what for? The woman is not there! The parents are being selfish keeping her here. It has been 15 years, and she has not improved.

Everyone is calling these doctors and judges "murderers". The murderer was nature, plain and simple. People die. Even if these fundies get what they want, she will still be a vegetable. This story, either way it ends, does not end well. This is life, and some of these people just need to get it!

26. I understand that swallowing saliva and swallowing food are very different
And that they engage different regions of the brain. Consider that we don't always drool when we sleep, and we also don't aspirate our saliva. Thus, we swallow it without any conscious awareness. Except in cases of somnambulism, the same can't be said about eating or drinking while asleep.
