A judge in the US state of Florida has rejected a bid by Governor Jeb Bush to become the legal guardian of brain-damaged woman Terri Schiavo.

The decision means that Mrs Schiavo's parents have all but failed in their attempt to keep her alive.

It follows the Supreme Court's rejection earlier on Thursday of a request to resume feeding her while her parents continue their legal battle . . . .

The BBC's James Coomarasamy in Washington says the chances of Mrs Schiavo's life being saved are now rapidly dwindling, but as long as she is alive her parents and their supporters are unlikely to throw in the towel.

There have been so many hearings in the last couple of days that it's hard to keep them straight.

In reading the various news accounts at this hour, I note they say nothing about what legal channels are still open to the Schindlers. I think they still have an appeal pending before the full 11th Circuit, but I could be wrong about that.

Tne Federal hearing with judge Whittemore was delayed due to a suspicious package on the steps of the federal court house - I think it's in session now, though...
