Forgoing medical care. What will happen the next time...
...a family forgoes medical treatment for a child or other family member because of their religious beliefs? Will Bush--who claims to be religious--and Congress intervene then? What will be more important to them in that scenario, the "culture of life" or "freedom of religion"? Has this been discussed already?
2. I'm not just talking about medical treatment for children.

What about medical treatment for another adult who shares in that religion? What if prayer wasn't working and the person was slowly dying but still convinced that God would intervene? Would Bush and Congress intervene instead?
(snip) RESULTS: One hundred forty fatalities were from conditions for which survival rates with medical care would have exceeded 90%. Eighteen more had expected survival rates of >50%. All but 3 of the remainder would likely have had some benefit from clinical help. CONCLUSIONS: When faith healing is used to the exclusion of medical treatment, the number of preventable child fatalities and the associated suffering are substantial and warrant public concern. Existing laws may be inadequate to protect children from this form of medical neglect. (snip)
My question has more to do with whether Bush and Congress would respect a family's faith or would a person's health be more important. The sick person does not have to be a child. The point I was trying to make was that I think that this scenario would put Bush and Congress--but especially Bush--in a particulary awkward situation, considering George's much proclaimed religiosity. What if Michael Shiavo were convinced that God would heal Terry and there was no need for a feeding tube? How might that change things for Bush?
